Now that I'm no longer coaching under Texas UIL, my take on high school athletes who transfer. ๐๐
This isnโt about calling out individual coaches, schools, or administrators, and itโs not about specific eligibility rulings. Itโs a broader reflection on how the system feels from an athlete development and coaching standpoint. Why does it sometimes feel like student-athletes get caught in situations where movement and eligibility become complicated, and, in some cases, inconsistent depending on circumstance?
Make a way, find a way with whoโs in front of you. Develop the athletes you have the best you can. Thatโs all you can do.
Donโt wish ill will on kids. Many of the decisions impacting them arenโt even their own. Parents make choices they believe are best for their children, whether we agree with them or not. Sometimes those decisions are influenced by real-life factors, jobs, finances, relocation, or family circumstances.
Things happen. Athletes move. Families make decisions. Opportunities change. Yes, college programs deal with this constantly, rosters change, sometimes significantly, year to year through the transfer portal. Different level, different rules, but the reality of constant roster movement is part of todayโs athletic landscape.
The point isnโt to compare systems directly, but to highlight this: control is limited to who is in front of you. The best coaches arenโt focused on trying to hold onto kids at all costs or block movement, theyโre focused on developing the athletes who are there and welcoming the new ones who arrive.
At the end of the day, the goal should always be to impact young people, develop them, and prepare them for whatโs next, not make them feel trapped or like theyโre being used for an agenda. The goal is to help them reach the next level, whether thatโs through one program or somewhere else.
๐ Some truths do not stay in a season. They follow you from the locker room, to the bleachers, to the district office. This data says a lot:
๐ข Student-athletes averaged a 3.61 GPA, compared with 3.03 for non-athletes.
๐ก That is a +0.58 GPA difference!
๐ข Student-athletes missed 4 fewer days of school per year.
๐ก They had 18% fewer absences overall.
๐ And the deeper point may be even more important: when coaches pair accountability with belief, the impact gets stronger. Students show up more consistently, perform better academically, and grow in ways that reach far beyond the scoreboard.
๐บ At @LongviewISD, we are blessed with remarkable coaches in EVERY sport. They are teachers, mentors, leaders, standard-setters, and steady voices in the lives of our young people.
โ Athletics matters.
โ Academics matters.
โ Character matters.
The best coaches understand all three. As a Lobo parent and administrator, I am so proud of the work being done across Lobo Athletics. #LoboUp #CoachingMatters ๐๐๐โพ๐ฅโฝ๐โณ๐พ๐โโ๏ธ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ๐ฃ๐๐ฅ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฃ

@CoachHPrice 3 schools, this fall will start year 26
3 years as a middle school assistant
4 years as a HS subvarsity assistant
3 years as a varsity assistant at same school
16th year this fall as HS varsity OL
Hoping to start a thread where coaches comment their stops in the journey. Iโd love to see what the average path of a coach is.
3 years as a student assistant in college.
1 year as a freshmen coach
2 years as a JV coach
5 years as a varsity head coach
Coaches are really good when their players are really good. Never forget that.
Iโve been in a semi final game as a HC and Iโve also been 3-7.
I can tell you with certainty the 3-7 year was a better coaching job.
People who focus solely on W/L will always miss the mark.

@txhsfbchat Main goal for this year is to hammer the fundamentals. As a first year program, many of our kids have never played the game. Huge emphasis on S&C and teaching them the nuances of football. Most play other sports, so the athleticism is there. Key is them falling in love with it.
@txhsfbchat Before you can just send a kid to a camp or advise him on which camp is in his best interest. You also want to stay under three hours of driving. If it requires you to stay overnight or fly, itโs ill-advised to attend. Stay local and stay AWAY FROM MEGA CAMPS.
@txhsfbchat We have three total 7โs this summer. Iโm not a huge fan of them anymore because school 7โs are starting to look a lot like travel 7โs, as in coaches want to win the summer. But we are doing them just to compete so our guys can understand what itโs like to see a diff color jersey.
Football camps inflating 40-yard dash times isn't an accidentโit's a business model. Parents don't pay $100+ to hear their kid runs a 5.1.
Give a kid a 4.4-4.5, and they'll post it everywhere, praise the camp, and pay again next year. ๐โโ๏ธ๐ฐ๐
