I sat down with the @TPPF to talk about what is really driving up the price of health care in Texas: uncompensated care, federal mandates and the gaps taxpayers end up paying for.
This is one of my top priorities going into the 90th #txlege. #HD130

The AANS and CNS weighed in on @CMSGov’s CY27 OPPS/ASC proposed rule, with a clear focus on protecting patient safety, access to care, and physicians' clinical judgment.
Our CY27 OPPS/ASC priorities:
→ Keep a clinically meaningful Inpatient Only list
→ End unnecessary prior authorization for cervical fusion & spinal neurostimulators
→ Ensure quality measures recognize appropriate care—not penalize it
→ Protect physician clinical judgment on where complex care is delivered
The right care. The right setting. The right time.

"Run to the Problem" — A Neurosurgeon's Take | The TANS Annual Conference
What kind of person becomes a neurosurgeon? At the TANS 2026 Annual Conference, Ramsey Ashour, MD, put it simply: they're people who thrive on intensity and challenge — the ones who run toward the problem.
Michael Levy, M.S.N., APRN, ACNP-BC, CNRN - an acute care nurse practitioner who manages the brain tumor follow-up clinic at UT Southwestern in Dallas - tells us why neurosurgeons work in a team.
And yet, legislators are constantly lobbied to pass legislation that hurts doctors while simultaneously turning a blind eye to the rest of it. And when we do pass something meaningful to protect doctors and patients, some knuckleheads respond by trying to pass legislation to unwind it in the name of “lowering costs”.
We’re fortunate to have physicians in Congress. And we’re fortunate to have physicians in state legislatures, like Tom Oliverson, MD, in Texas.
Physicians have the highest level of training in the healthcare system. Nobody else comes close.
The physician lawmakers understand healthcare.
“It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to do this… but at least you’ve got one.” 🧠🗳️
That’s what AdventHealth #neurosurgeon@DrJohnCowan says as he takes his clinical expertise from the OR to the campaign trail, running for Congress in Georgia’s 11th District.
At #AANS2026, Neurosurgery Podcast co-host Dr. Michael Wang sat down with Dr. Cowan to discuss his journey, his vision, and why he’s stepping up to serve.

I saw a patient recently who had already been evaluated for a lesion that concerned them. They were told it was fine.
It was not fine. It was an invasive melanoma.
This is what happens when scope of practice becomes a policy debate instead of a patient safety conversation.
We had another phenomenal meeting at #AANS2026 with our incredible class of Socioeconomic Fellows!
Stay tuned in coming weeks for updates on adopted resolutions, completed projects, and all other news from the premier socioeconomic organization for neurosurgeons!
🍾An incredible day for the CSNS meeting at #AANS2026 with all-star speakers!
We were honored to host @DrJohnCowan, neurosurgeon-turned-politician currently running for Congress in Georgia's 11th District, and @DutchRojas, USMC veteran and healthcare entrepreneur!
