When it comes to providing reliable, affordable energy, Texas continues to lead the way.
TXOGA has just released our May 2026 Monthly Energy Economics Review, and the numbers show that the Lone Star State’s oil and natural gas industry is operating at near-record highs, driving economic growth and strengthening energy security at home and abroad.
Here are a few key highlights from the latest report:
In April, Texas produced an estimated 5.8 million barrels of crude oil per day and 35.5 billion cubic feet per day of marketed natural gas. That means Texas alone accounts for 42.2% of U.S. crude oil and 29.6% of marketed natural gas production.
Total Texas energy exports reached $22.1 billion in March (a massive 14.9% increase year-over-year) led by $10 billion in crude oil and $6.8 billion in refined products.
Thanks to incredible technological advancements and drilling efficiency, new production per rig has skyrocketed by 53% in the Eagle Ford and 55% in the Permian since January 2023.
Texas natural gas continues to power our state and our allies, with 15.6 billion cubic feet per day exported via LNG and pipelines to keep global energy markets stable.
Texas energy producers are proving that we can meet growing demand while continually improving efficiency and productivity. This success is a testament to the hard work of the hundreds of thousands of Texans working in the industry every day.

Today, the Texas Oil & Gas Association joined a coalition to release a joint statement condemning outside interference in corporate relocations to Texas. Following the release, TXOGA President Todd Staples issued the following statement:
“Texas remains the global leader in economic opportunity because we have built a stable regulatory and legal climate that encourages businesses to grow and thrive, and this benefits every single Texan. From a specialized business court system to ensuring shareholder transparency in corporate elections, our state has sent a clear signal to the world that investment is welcome here. Texas is open for business, and any action to undermine this foundation must be rejected because limiting growth limits the potential for individual prosperity.”

The Texas Workforce Commission has released employment data through March 2026, showing that upstream oil and gas employment increased by 1,800 jobs in March compared with February. Total upstream employment stood at 193,300 jobs in March 2026. Relative to the same month one year earlier, employment is down by 7,100 jobs, representing a drop of 3.5 percent year-over-year.
“This data underscores the enduring strength and adaptability of Texas’ energy sector despite recent market fluctuations,” said Todd Staples, president of the Texas Oil & Gas Association. “Current employment levels remain significantly above historical norms and reflect robust gains since the pandemic-era lows. While it is premature to assume the increased employment will continue, announcements have been made that some companies are expanding production. These increased job numbers are a tremendous benefit to the families who are supported by this industry and are important for the communities in which they occur.”
