Last week, we were honored to participate in LULAC Week, recognizing the civil rights organization's 96th anniversary. LULAC members held a reception at the MACRI Visitor Center, and Councilwoman Teri Castillo presented them with a Milestone Recognition Award. Que viva LULAC!
Happy Veterans Day! From the Revolutionary War to modern times, Latino service members have been central to the defense of our nation. Veterans, like American GI Forum members, have also been at the forefront of advocating for civil rights. We are grateful to all who have served.
Happy birthday to Nina Otero-Warren! Born #OTD in 1882, Otero-Warren was a leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement and the first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools. She emphasized using the Spanish language in the suffrage fight in order to reach Hispanic women.

Born #OTD in 1905, Raoul Cortez was a pioneer of Spanish language media, founding the first full-time Spanish language radio and TV stations in the US. A consummate advocate for Mexican Americans, he was active in LULAC, serving as national president 1948-1949.

Born #OTD in 1941, María Antoinetta Berriozábal was the first Mexican American woman to serve on San Antonio's city council, where she served for 10 years. She continues to serve as a community advocate for numerous quality of life issues facing the city's residents.
