Massive. New Harvard study finds that AI-written paper reviews now beat the best human peer reviews on every measure the authors tested.
Peer review is slow and often misses errors. Earlier studies concluded AI should only assist human reviewers, not replace them.
They used 134 reviews from rapidPeer, a Harvard service that pays expert reviewers well. Claude Opus 4.8 reviewed the same 1124 papers, and GPT-5.5 plus 3 former journal editors judged the pairs blind.
GPT-5.5 picked the AI review in all 132 decided pairs, and the editors picked it 87% of the time. Only 5.5% of the AI's claims about the paper were wrong, versus 15.9% for the human reviews.
Teams that depend on expert critique can now let AI do the first full review pass, and keep a human for the final decision.

"My personal answer to the question of what mathematics is all about is that it’s about proving theorems (problem solving), developing tools (theory building) and seeing where to go next (conjecture formulation)." -- Buzzard

On this occasion, I also strongly recommend that you examine the Leiden Declaration, which I support and was one of its first signatories. You can access this declaration via this link:

25 Fields Medalists have published a statement expressing certain hesitations regarding the use of AI in mathematics. I encourage you to support it as well. You can read the text and show your support by clicking the link below.

Given all of the drama around the OpenAI / Navier-Stokes Millennium problem, I'm surprised there isn't more attention being paid to the Leiden Declaration on AI and mathematics, which was released in June 2026.
Some highlights from the declaration:
Threats:
- Technologies that draw extensively on the published mathematical commons undermine the traditional system of attribution. Models trained on published works frequently return outputs that do not properly cite the human works they synthesize.
- Technologies which affect the way in which mathematics is practiced may disturb the current system of incentives.
- Proper evaluation is endangered if results are communicated through informal channels such as press releases or blog posts, often without any research paper or other disclosure of information necessary for scientific evaluation.
Recommendations to individual mathematicians:
- Adhere to principles of open science
- Affirm the humanity of authorship
- Put effort into proper attribution
Recommendations for commercial artificial intelligence:
- We call on collaborations between mathematicians and industry to abide, at minimum, by the standards we expect of our colleagues and that are described throughout this Declaration.

Looks like we are indeed close to Navier Stokes (pending checking final details and peer review/formalisation)!
See the description on Tao's blog discussing recent work of @__alpoge__ and Buckmaster (with assistance in various forms from AI).

Here's Tristan Buckmaster's statement. (You've probably seen bits of it quoted here today, but the whole thing is worth reading.)

When I first began university, I read a paper by Peter Sarnak on one of the Millennium Prize Problems. I have kept a printed copy of that paper for almost 20 years. Today, at #ICM2026, I had the opportunity to listen to the author of that paper and to meet him in person.
