In February 1989, a young schoolteacher in a small village in Fukushima, Japan, went to use the toilet in her home and noticed something strange inside the pit.
It was a shoe.
Confused, she went outside to check the septic tank connected to the toilet. Inside, she saw a human leg.
When police and local firefighters arrived, they found a man’s body stuck deep inside the narrow tank. The space was so tight that they could not pull him out. To remove him, they had to dig around the tank and break it open.
Once the body was washed, police identified the man as Naoyuki Kanno, a 26-year-old power plant worker who had been missing for four days.
He had been found curled on his back in the cramped space, with his knees bent and his hands crossed over his chest. He was naked from the waist up, and his face was turned toward the toilet opening.
The postmortem examination only raised more questions. There were no serious injuries and no signs of a struggle. Kanno had simply frozen to death inside the tank.
Police concluded that he had entered the tank on his own and ruled his death an accident, though they could not explain why he was there. The most common theory was that he had crawled inside to spy on women using the toilet.
But the official ruling had a serious problem. The opening of the tank was only about 14 inches wide, narrower than his shoulders. Many who knew him refused to believe that he could have squeezed through it by himself.
More than three decades later, how Naoyuki Kanno ended up inside that septic tank, and why, remains a mystery.
Heroes or criminals? 💔 Three brothers step in to protect their younger sister from an abusive stepfather, but now they’re facing life in prison for taking matters into their own hands.
