⚠️ Muslim woman verbally abused for wearing Hijab in East London

Statement from the victim:

I am 19 years old. I am providing this statement regarding an incident of racist and verbally abusive behaviour that I experienced on the 169 bus going towards Barking, abbey green.

At approximately 4:20 pm, I boarded the 169 bus at Waverly Gardens, Stop G, in Barkingside. I was travelling to a faith school where I teach children. The man involved in the incident was already on the bus when I boarded. He was near the designated buggy area.

While I was standing on the bus, a mother boarded at Princes Road with her two children. She had a baby in a buggy and an older daughter. I know the mother and her daughter because I teach her daughter at the faith school.

The mother was wearing a veil. The man began behaving disrespectfully towards her regarding the position of her buggy, despite the fact that he was in the designated buggy area. He then began making verbally abusive and racist comments towards her relating to her veil.

As I was also wearing a veil, he directed comments towards me as well. He made offensive and degrading comments about our veils, told us to remove them, and made comments about how we should dress.

The man then came very close to me, pointed at me, and said that people like us are violent and abusive and that we should get out of this country. He also repeatedly used offensive and abusive language towards us.

This happened in front of the mother's two children, including her baby and her daughter. The child appeared frightened by what was happening. I also felt extremely belittled, intimidated and vulnerable during the incident. I found his behaviour deeply upsetting and distressing, particularly because I was simply travelling to work and had not done anything to provoke or engage with him.

The man also told me that he was educated and that I was uneducated.

He continued behaving in this manner until he got off the bus at Eastern Avenue Stop NE, approximately at **4:35 pm**, which was one stop before I was due to get off.

Since the incident, I have been extremely shaken and distressed. I feel traumatised by what happened and I keep thinking about the way he approached me, pointed at me and told me that people like us should leave the country. I felt very vulnerable and frightened at the time, and I am still scared now. The incident has affected my sense of safety, and I currently feel anxious and frightened about going out and travelling on public transport on my own. I did not expect to experience this kind of abuse while simply travelling to work, and it has left me feeling intimidated and less safe in public.
