The scatter shows 30 years of change in the SPX (y-axis) vs. the change of the VIX (x-axis).

Red is all the days the VIX has jumped at least 9%.
Over 100 red dots but only 7 in the upper right quadrant (SPX up). And only 3 saw the S&P>1%.
The last such day was May 5, 1997.
