In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy.
She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid.
The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%.
She handed out the checks herself.
In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college.
When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months.
You've probably heard that part.
Here's the part you haven't:
The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top.
Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave.
She built her county an entire hospital.
She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it.
In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees.
Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal.
In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release.
And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it.
She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway.
She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did.
Rest in Peace, Dolly 🇺🇸
BREAKING: EWWWWWW! Military researcher Seth Harp reveals even more GROSS pictures of the USS George Washington, showing dangerous mold growing all over the place!
What the HELL are we spending our military budget on?
Seth Harp, an author and researcher who famously exposed a sex and drug trafficking ring run by special forces units at Fort Bragg, shared new pictures of an aircraft carrier that is now being deployed to relieve the beleaguered USS Abraham Lincoln.
“More pictures from aboard the moldy old USS George Washington, which recently underwent an incredibly expensive ‘complex overhaul’ that took SIX YEARS to finish. Our navy is like this because we only have ONE shipyard capable of refueling and repairing a nuclear aircraft carrier,” wrote Harp on Twitter.
“Meanwhile, a single Chinese shipyard in ONE YEAR (2024) produced more ships than the entire American shipbuilding industry has produced since World War II!”
The state of the USS George Washington is reflective of the entire US military as a whole, which is quite literally rotting away from the inside while defense contractor CEOs sip margeritas on their yacht, paid for with our tax dollars.
“Trump replacing the USS Lincoln with the USS Washington is him gambling more chips on a failed casino binge. He’s going to blow US readiness for decades because he can’t walk away from Iran,” warns Rosemary Kelanic, the director of Middle East Program at the Defense Priorities think tank. “We are overextended. This ‘excursion’ needs to end.”
These images are coming on the heels of other images showing the gross, mouldy food that is being fed to our sailors on aircraft carriers as supply problems and lengthy deployments in combat zones take their toll.
So if we can’t take care of our troops, can’t keep our ships clean, can’t build enough missiles, and can’t win any wars…then WHAT ARE WE SPENDING ALL THIS MONEY ON?
The American people deserve answers...and Pete Hegseth needs to be held accountable for this disaster.
On this day, August 16, in 1869, Members of the Powell Expedition (the first scientific and mapping expedition through Grand Canyon by boat), had reached Bright Angel Creek and decided to spend a day to "rest and repair". They repaired damage to their boats and made some new oars.
Bright Angel Campground, and Phantom Ranch are located here today. (Colorado River mile 88).
John Wesley Powell writes. "Early in the morning the whole party starts up to explore the Bright Angel River, with the special purpose of seeking timber from which to make oars.
"A couple of miles above we find a large pine log, which has been floated down from the plateau, probably from an altitude of more than 6,000 feet, but not many miles back. On its way it must have passed over many cataracts and falls, for it bears scars in evidence of the rough usage which it has received. The men roll it on skids, and the work of sawing oars is commenced.
"This stream heads away back under a line of abrupt cliffs that terminates the plateau, and tumbles down more than 4,000 feet in the first mile or two of its course; then runs through a deep, narrow canyon until it reaches the river.
"Late in the afternoon I return and go up a little gulch just above this creek, about 200 yards from camp, and discover the ruins of two or three old houses, which were originally of stone laid in mortar. Only the foundations are left, but irregular blocks, of which the houses were constructed, lie scattered about.
"In one room I find an old mealing-stone, deeply worn, as if it had been much used. A great deal of pottery is strewn around, and old trails, which in some places are deeply worn into the rocks, are seen." —John Wesley Powell
How does the park balance interpreting the past while also protecting it? The site that Powell examined, the Bright Angel Pueblo site, was occupied over 900 years ago by Ancestral Puebloan families who built the structures using local soil and rock.
Today's park archaeologists, using a mud mortar, fill holes, replace eroded mortar, and reset loose stones in the walls while taking care to visually match the work of the original builders. This periodic maintenance ensures the walls remain stable and the site is preserved for future generations to experience.
You can help protect sensitive cultural resources by respecting closures, staying on designated trails, viewing sites from a distance, and leaving artifacts where you find them.

Grand Canyon National Park is located in an area rich in Indigenous history and culture. There are 11 present day tribes that have long-standing cultural ties with the Grand Canyon: the Havasupai, Hopi and Hualapai tribes, the Navajo and Yavapai Apache nations, the Pueblo of Zuni and the Southern Paiute including the Kaibab, Las Vegas and Moapa bands of Paiute Indians, the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah and the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe.
In recent years, the park has been working closely with local Indigenous leaders to incorporate their perspectives into park management and visitor education. This collaboration helps to ensure that the cultural significance of the land is respected and preserved.

No president in modern history has used the office to enrich himself the way Donald Trump has. That's not a political opinion. It’s the conclusion of ethics watchdogs who have spent their careers watching this stuff.
The crypto ventures. The foreign deals with the Saudis, the Qataris, the Emiratis. The $400 million Qatari jet. The $90 million in media settlements. The gold golf balls from the Japanese.
This is the man who told you he was going to clean up Washington.
For this President, the presidency isn’t about protecting our democracy or the public trust. It’s about turning the highest office in the land into a personal cash register, and he’s been doing it from day one.
Trump’s “victory timeline” claims.
Mar 3: "We won the war."
Mar 7: "We defeated Iran."
Mar 9: "We must attack Iran."
Mar 9: "The war is ending almost completely, and very beautifully."

@SoFiSupport I have been hit by a scam. USAA can confirm that and I have police and FTC report numbers. Unfortunately the scammers hit my checking account yesterday and the day before causing a pay reversal. I will get it paid but it may take some time. Please tell me what to do!
