This week on Back2Besa, we uplift the inspiring story of Sharron Hayes, a Puyallup hairstylist and owner of Braided and Dreaded. A retired US Army veteran, Hayes served for over 13 years and completed two combat tours. After transitioning to civilian life, she became a regulation hairstylist for service members, ensuring their braids and locs met military standards, which allowed them to achieve high-ranking positions.

Hayes' personal journey is one of resilience and overcoming adversity. Like many veterans, unfortunately, she faced substance abuse issues after leaving the army, but proactively sought help in rehab and achieved sobriety. Braided and Dreaded emerged as her next significant accomplishment, where she channeled the incredible strength and meticulous attention to detail honed in the army into genuinely serving Black and brown communities without compromising cultural authenticity.

Braided and Dreaded is more than just a salon; it's a sanctuary where identity, healing, and community flourish. Hayes' business has garnered high-profile clients, including JP Crawford of the Seattle Mariners and Seattle City Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth. Crawford has lauded Hayes as the best hairstylist he's ever had, commending her dedication to authenticity as clients navigate their personal hair journeys. Hollingsworth emphasizes the importance of supporting Black businesses and appreciates Hayes' professionalism, as well as the comfortable and safe space she creates. Hayes' gift extends beyond hair; it's about fostering meaningful connections between culture, individuality, and people, one braid at a time. Her journey highlights resilience, authenticity, and the protection of Black joy, proving that honoring culture can lead to the highest levels of success.
