I left Anthropic's safety team two weeks ago. Now feels like a good moment to explain why.

AI companies are racing to build machines that are much smarter than any human, and we may not survive this. I want to work from the outside to ensure the public is informed about these risks, and help the world navigate this transition responsibly.

Right now, AI companies are underinvesting in safety. A company could undergo an intelligence explosion, or lose control of its systems, without the public ever knowing. We only found out about the HuggingFace incident because the agents broke out onto the public internet.

I don’t think that’s acceptable for a technology that might cause extinction-level risks. The public should demand far more transparency. We can’t steer this technology safely without more people being able to see where it’s going.

Some of this is basic: companies should disclose their progress towards recursive self-improvement, report safety incidents and near-misses, meet minimum safety standards, and get independent guarantees that they are meeting those standards.

I’ll be joining @METR_Evals to do independent evaluations of these risks. I want to show the world that these guardrails are possible, and that by doing them we can move these companies’ incentives away from racing and towards responsible development.

Wednesday's rain outlook - Delhi NCR (2nd Sept)

•Monsoon axis and convergence will shift more towards Delhi NCR from west UP.

• Isolated moderate showers can form up after 10am covering 10-30% areas in NCR.

• One spell of fairly widespread moderate to heavy rains expected in parts of Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad during afternoon till late evening hours. NCR level coverage during peak spell is expected to be 40-70%.

• Most parts of NCR can receive rainfall between 15-60mm with a few parts with heavy downpour can report b/w 60-100mm. There is risk of water logging in most low lying areas in such accumulation of rains.

• While the morning commute hours are largely unaffected but afternoon and evening rains can lead to travel disruptions later in the day. Plan accordingly.

Many stations in Chhattisgarh, East UP, Odisha are already running closer to all time high rainfall figures in August.
Another low pressure area will move inland in next 48 hours ensuring heavy to very heavy rains will occur in #Chhattisgarh #Odisha #Jharkhand #Bihar #Bengal and east #UttarPradesh starting tomorrow, peak rainfall likely during 1st - 3rd September with chances of extreme rainfall over Chhattisgarh and east MP (Potential 300-700mm in parts during 3 days).
East UP, East MP, Chhattisgarh and Odisha to expect river flooding, streams overflowing and urban flooding in the first week of September!

The West pushed the climate-change agenda hard.

And we, as usual, were too busy trying to please them—or too naïve to question it.

Our semi-literate politicians and quota-passed Babus happily picked up the prescriptions and started experimenting on Indians.

We have somehow become the world’s convenient laboratory.

Vaccines? Test them where people have the least ability to question what is being done.

Air pollution? Blame and restrict cars, because fixing the real sources is harder.

EVs? Push them aggressively while much of the battery technology, cells and critical supply chain are still imported.

And then call it “progress”.

The irony is painful.

I am not against vaccines, cleaner air, EVs or climate action. I am against policies being implemented without asking the most basic question:

Does this actually work for India and Indians?

But that would require politicians who understand the subject and bureaucrats who have the confidence to challenge the script.

Instead, we get obedience masquerading as policy.

And ordinary Indians get to pay for the experiments.

We don’t have a shortage of intelligence in India.

We have a shortage of people in power willing to use it.
