I’m buzzing with excitement about the impact of #AI on #biology. @Microsoft and @OpenAI are about to roll out the Stargate system in parts, and honestly, it feels like we’re at the cusp of a whole new era in AI and computational power. This isn’t just another step forward; it’s going to be a giant leap for AI and for folks in the synthetic biology community to use these tools.

Stargate will be able to chew through petabytes of genomic data as if it’s nothing, revealing secrets of biology we’ve never seen before. Imagine uncovering new disease markers or gaining insights into complex ecosystems at breakneck speed. AI is going to be like giving us the ultimate detective toolkit for biology.

With the power of Stargate, designing proteins could become as routine as sketching on a napkin. Think about engineering enzymes for cleaner manufacturing, or custom-building proteins that can tackle pollution. With gene editing, we could see a monumental shift in how quickly and accurately we can edit genes. COP28 is now on the verge of complete failure. The world desperately needs to phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible, but this obsequious draft reads as if OPEC dictated it word for word. It is even worse than many had feared. It is “Of the Petrostates, By the Petrostates and For the Petrostates.” It is deeply offensive to all who have taken this process seriously. There are 24 hours left to show whose side the world is on: the side that wants to protect humanity’s future by kickstarting the orderly phase out of fossil fuels or the side of the petrostates and the leaders of the oil and gas companies that are fueling the historic climate catastrophe. In order to prevent COP28 from being the most embarrassing and dismal failure in 28 years of international climate negotiations, the final text must include clear language on phasing out fossil fuels. Anything else is a massive step backwards from where the world needs to be to truly address the climate crisis and make sure the 1.5°C goal doesn’t die in Dubai.

For those attending COP (or following the coverage) here are my favorite 10 cliché, platitudes, talking points, and overused, yet meaningless phrases.

They have all already been used countless times at COP28.

I hope these are useful in navigating the climate genre for you.

1. It’s time to move from words to action.

2. We need to urgently address climate change boldly/loudly/.

3. Climate action/ambition emboldens…youth…indigenous populations…developing economies, etc.

4. Only by working together can we achieve our shared goals/objectives/vision, ambitions, etc.

5. Public - private partnership is essential for catalyzing/leveraging, etc.

6. Investing in/creating new architectures for people/youth/developing economies/technology etc. is essential for…

7. If we don’t make real progress here, it will be too late.

8. It’s now, it’s us, it’s… etc.

9. This side event/private dinner/report launch is essential for making joint progress towards raising our shared/joint/bold ambition.
