Preaching Over Graves: Franklin Graham’s Silence on the Amhara Genocide

Franklin Graham, what god do you serve? You step onto Ethiopian soil, where the blood of thousands of Amharas and Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) followers is still fresh, yet you preach of salvation while ignoring the carnage unfolding before your eyes. What manner of gospel is this? What god condones silence in the face of genocide?

You speak of revival in a land where churches are burned, priests are executed, and faithful believers are slaughtered for refusing to submit to Abiy Ahmed’s ethno-fascist state. You stand alongside the very regime that has turned Ethiopia into a graveyard for its oldest Christian community, yet you dare to claim you are spreading the word of Christ? No, Franklin Graham. You are not here to bring light. You are here to provide moral cover for the darkness that is consuming Ethiopia.

While you rally for lost souls, thousands of Amhara children are orphaned by state-sanctioned massacres. While you pray in Meskel Square, drones rain fire on Amhara villages. While you speak of repentance, the regime you refuse to condemn has turned faith into a death sentence.

Where was your voice when Orthodox Christians were butchered in their homes? Where was your outrage when churches were desecrated and monks were gunned down? Where was your gospel when Amhara civilians were executed in mass graves, their bodies left to rot in the streets? You preach about a spiritual capital while standing in the ruins of a slaughterhouse.

As Dietrich Bonhoeffer memorably said, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” Your silence is complicity. Your presence is an endorsement. And your gospel, Franklin Graham, is hollow when it does not speak against evil.

WHY CONGO IS BLEEDING

The Congolese people are living in poverty and dying at the hands of rebel groups thanks to Western greed. That’s the view political commentator Shahid Bolsen expresses in this clip.

He notes how the Congo is a treasure trove of all the minerals on which the modern world depends - sitting, for example, on 70% of global cobalt supplies. Makers of smartphones and e-cars would rather make a bigger profit by getting their minerals dirt cheap from conflict-marred supply chains than remove the incentive for militias like the M23 to keep on killing in their quest to capture ever more lucrative Congolese mines - while consumers of gadgets would rather pay less for them than pressure governments into forcing the big corporations to clean up their act.

This is not just about corporate greed, it is a neo-colonial economic war that benefits not only Western multinationals but also their regional allies. Since January, M23 have captured the two largest cities in Congo’s mineral rich east - Goma and Bukavu. At least 3,000 were killed in Goma, with 700,000 displaced. For years, the rebel group has served as a proxy for Rwandan and Ugandan commercial interests in DRC. Kinshasa claims to lose $1 billion a year to resource theft by its neighbours. M23 reportedly makes around $800,000 a month from taxation on mining in Rubaya, a town captured in 2024.

HOW THE IMF KEEPS AFRICANS POOR

Financial-rights activist Alex Gladstein dissects the IMF's African operations in this video. Drawing on the case of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), he reveals a pattern of the institution appointing its own officials to oversee African treasuries, fostering export-led economies, devaluing local currencies and striking deals with dictators.

In Kenya, protests erupted in June 2024 against an IMF-backed finance bill, with demonstrators accusing the government of jeopardising the nation's future by succumbing to the organisation's neocolonialist tactics. Currently, Kenya is in talks with the IMF to establish a new lending programme, following a $606 million loan granted in October 2024, further diminishing public confidence.

Instead of pursuing comprehensive solutions to Africa's escalating debt crisis or considering viable alternatives, such as progressive tax reforms, the IMF continues to implement policies that weaken the economies of African nations.

One way it does this is by granting them loans - but only on condition they privatise their economies and allow Western corporations almost free access to their raw materials and markets, the perfect way to lock African nations into poverty.
