Eight hours into the INDIA bloc’s protest in central Delhi, Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders conducted a sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan after police stopped their march to the Election Commission headquarters.

The protest began with Opposition MPs marching from Parliament towards Nirvachan Sadan, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and opposing the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Police barricades halted the march near Parliament Street, leading to a prolonged standoff.

Rahul Gandhi climbed a police barricade and, along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other leaders, later entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises. Several Opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and TMC MPs Derek O’Brien and Abhishek Banerjee, were detained.

Rahul Gandhi said around 300 Opposition MPs wanted to meet the CEC and the Election Commissioners and questioned why they were being prevented from reaching the ECI office. The Election Commission, however, said it had not received a formal request for such a meeting.

As night fell, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other Opposition leaders remained at Akashvani Bhawan, till they were detained amid a heavy police and RAF presence in the area.
