Happy #thimblethursday from Tatter! This zinc and brass thimble is actually an accessibility tool designed for blind sewists to easily thread a blind needle by pulling the thread against the notches and pushing the needle into the divot. So cool!
Fun fact, they used to leave the edges of wool garments raw because the quality of the fabric was good enough not to fray. Also to cut down on the bulk of turning a seam/hem with multiple layers of thick wool
Happy #thimblethursday! Today you get 4 thimbles in one post: these tiny plastic gel thimbles with floral decoration. Is it just me or would you mistake these for gum drops?
The Meeting on the Turret Stairs [also known as Hellelil and Hildebrand] (1864) by Frederic William Burton (Irish artist, lived 1816-1900). The love story of Hellelil, who fell in love with her personal guard Hildebrand. "Ireland's favourite painting". #stpatricksday
Absolutely lovely embroidered book cover. I like seeing here the echoes of embroidered gloves from around that time and a bit earlier. Those echoes are especially present along the book’s spine
Dreaming of spring and frolicking around town in this embroidered tunic and shoes, designed and stitched by Pre-Raphaelite painter and model Marie Spartali Stillman. That purple! Those flowers! Totally iconic. Now in the collection of the @delartmuseum
Teaching all about the #skirt today and the ever changing associations accompanying the garment over the course of centuries. I shan’t be sweeping into the room in blue velvet but let’s appreciate this late #1870s two piece for a moment and the details of its skirt @mfaboston
Happy #thimblethursday ! Today’s engraved silver thimble is from the Raffles Hotel in Singapore— would you use this? Or do you think it’s just for display?
Should you be in need of a wearable duvet, that is both super padded and deliciously stylish, you can’t go far wrong with this #1920s blue and gold affair. I imagine a gamine haircut and kohl rimmed eyes peering from above the cushioned collar #bunkagakuen
The timeless design of this C17th plate in our collection continues to inspire talented designers across a wide variety of mediums.
Textile artisan @knitwhitted hand-knitted a jumper with the iconic memento mori, influenced by the plate’s powerful inscription.
