We are deeply saddened to hear the news today of the death of Sir Howard Bernstein who played a pivotal role in the regeneration of Manchester. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
The north of England has featured very prominently in previous elections because of electoral maths and the shock of Brexit. As a result, it has been promised a lot. Not much of it has happened. People know that and are not surprised.
Some people might think I’ve been overly generous to the NP concept btw and who knows maybe they’re right. But the underperformance of regional cities has still been bumping along in the policy subconsciousness ever since Brexit, it’s just not been fashionable to go big on it
Maybe it will be bigger under Labour, maybe it won’t, because like so much about Labour I cannot tell and perhaps they don’t know either. But the basic premise of at least WANTING and TRYING to grow northern cities doesn’t feel like a bad starting point imho
This evening we joined communities across the Commonwealth lighting a beacon to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
The Town Mayor led a poignant service of remembrance which included readings by his chaplain and cadet.
Ahead of #DDay80, @BBC features Peover Hall on the Tatton Estate and the local pub #BellsOfPeover, where General Patton and Eisenhower made their D-Day plans.
During World War II Peover Hall was requisitioned as the HQ for General George Patton of the United States 3rd Army to train for the D-Day landings in 1944
