@ExnerPirot Tbh if the goal of Eby’s was to extract something, he hasn’t done a terribly good job. If Carney is serious about funding nation building projects that grow the economy, he would be doing all this stuff anyway.
@BenRabidoux 1. They’re brand new 2. The government presumably thinks it would cost them more to have someone build new buildings that would deliver several years from now.
@fabulavancouver@vancolour What if the government didn't buy these condos, but instead wanted to build brand new buildings, and they hired some developers to do it. What if those same developers were bag holding vacant condos and these contracts kept them in business. Would this be a bail out?
@TheStalwart Feels like the sort of things going on in sports trades, where a draft pick position for a star rental can change based on variables like playoff performance.
@fabulavancouver It’s true that no one is gonna build something they won’t make money on, but not a reason to disallow it. Maybe economic conditions change and a then rapid shift because it’s now able to be built.
I guess whether centres or villages first, it’s adding more retail both.
@fabulavancouver Does seem like upside to residents and shopkeepers. More variety and closer high streets for residents, and more retail vacancy = less pressure to increase retail rents, and lower rent inflation. If we can lower the barriers to retail entrepreneurs via lower rents that's good.
@TheStalwart@BlacklionCTA The recent Canada 150 passed by with not a great deal of effort and enthusiasm by the government and I feel even that was critiqued more than the lack of anything for USA 250.
terrible. 20 yrs ago, the internet was full of hobbyist blogs and forums. over time, these have been replaced by paywalled substacks and private discord channels, each a walled garden. google's decision to prioritize AI just makes it less likely ppl will create free, public info
@RobShaw_BC Fed and BC lawyers knew this wouldn't work so they didn't try. Richmond lawyers tried anyway and ate shit. So Poilievre wants to force lawyers to waste their time advancing arguments they know won't work. lol
@victoralonso_es Amazing resource thx!
I have a New Astro with the main flaw being a crack on the side of the control panel. I've never figured out how to repair it, asking around on random arcade forums. Was thinking of asking a boat builder for help since they work with fibreglass. Thoughts?
@MikePMoffatt It’s an option. The better move was the Dunbar diaspora that sold at the top and moved to SFHs in east van hoods with apartment development and pop growth. They now get walkable Michelin star restaurants while Dunbar is a retail wasteland. West side made the wrong choices.
@MikePMoffatt A poisoned chalice. High values but they lost out because they have no options if their health needs no longer fit their homes and the stagnation and decline in neighborhood population as it aged destroyed the retail vitality and quality of the area. (See: Dunbar Vancouver woes)
