TL;DR fine-tuning used up a lot of memory so i put in a patch from @apeoffire (thank you so much) that cut down on memory usage for a slight hit to time spent. then it was re-loading an already loaded model, which caused ram spikes that killed the colab instance.

2) Stateful numerical algorithms (e.g. Cholesky decomposition or SDE solvers).
