Inspired by the amazing #vocabulary instruction by @mrjergenskinder ‼️
First graders were learning about the #science behind flight.

Had the best time chatting with Melissa and Lori on @literacypodcast about explicit vocabulary instruction.

☘️ MARCH on the Podcast ☘️
🎉 Each month, we’re diving DEEP into a single literacy topic—giving you research-backed advice and classroom-tested tips all month long.
What can you learn about this month? VOCABULARY INSTRUCTION! 🤩 https://t.co/tZ5ndBWthN
Want to see an explicit vocabulary routine in action?
Watch how @Taylor_SOR introduces the word "invent" to her students and prepares them to learn about Benjamin Franklin.

I’ve done a deep dive of this resource - Syntax Knowledge to Practice. K-3 teachers, this book is GOLD for syntax knowledge for you AND your students through scaffolded lessons. I’ve learned so much!
Enjoyed presenting about #morphology instruction in K-2 classrooms last week!
Currently, we are using #morphememagic and embedding it into our knowledge building curriculums and structured literacy lessons.
Educators- How are you implementing morpheme instruction?
Inspiring to see @SeatonDC bring literacy training & education to life in the classroom.
I joined Ward 2 SBOE rep @AllisterSBOE to see the impacts of literacy focused teaching & how it’s helping our kids.
I will keep fighting for literacy investments for all of our schools.
At the beginning of the year, this student was segmenting every sound in CVC words.
I worked with her on successive blending, saying the sounds the slow way 🐢
Look what she can do NOW! 🤩
Proud teacher moment 👏🏻
Explicit phonics instruction is 🔑
Ss are learning to annotate the text by highlighting key evidence and adding notes.
I always follow up with inferential questions to push their thinking 🧠
The goal ➡️ Ss internalize these skills as readers
@SoRclassroom@goyenfoundation
@Taylor_SOR@goyenfoundation@SoRclassroom@dcpublicschools Totally agree! (And no need to teach different combos separately, e.g., a lesson on “st” - as soon as they know the consonant sounds, start to put them together, mix and match and use them!)
Some phonics curriculums and sequences plan for cons. blends to be taught later on (after CVC, digraphs, welded sounds, etc.)
My advice- DON’T WAIT!
When Ss are working on CVC words, use word chaining to add extra consonants. You will be amazed at what your Ss can do! 🤩
It’s important that Ss can read CVC words fluently before moving onto multisyllabic words.
Speed Drill 🏃🏼♀️
Read the CVC slowly in your 🧠
Read it the fast way out loud 📢
Ss saw these smaller words within bigger words in the text 📖
@goyenfoundation@SoRclassroom
Here’s a quick way to have students self-monitor their comprehension 💭
As Ss read through the text, have them draw a quick sketch to show understanding of what’s happening.
My student showed he understood another meaning of bite (chomp!) 😬
Find ways to connect phonemic awareness to writing! 🪢
Here’s a way I used syllable manipulation (with visual scaffolds) to prepare Ss for word chaining with multisyllabic words ✏️ (within the same lesson)

1st graders read to find out how money is made and what people can do with their money 💵
We learned about what a “vault” is and how it’s part of the process.
One student brought in a toy vault to show the class during morning meeting! Then we wrote about it 🤩
Kinders are wrapping up Module 2 with a Socratic Seminar- discussing what makes the following texts a good story:
The Little Red Hen 🐔🐀🐕🐷🐐
The Three Billy Goats Gruff 🐐🐐🐐🧌
The Three Little Pigs 🐷 🐷🐷🐺
