FWIW: My piece does not claim that British policing in 1829 or 1929 was race neutral in practice. It claims that the founding principle, absolute impartial service to the law, is the correct standard against which policing should be measured. That is a different claim entirely. The gap between principle and practice has always existed. The existence of that gap does not invalidate the principle. It indicts the practice.

The appropriate response to policing that fell short of absolute impartiality in 1829 is to move closer to that principle. Not to replace it with a framework that explicitly instructs officers that impartiality is a myth and that their whiteness prevents them from being neutral. That is not a correction. It is the abandonment of the standard altogether.

Dorothy Sayers documenting a constable's racism in 1927 is evidence that the principle was not being applied. It is not evidence that the principle was wrong. The Peelian standard condemned that constable's reaction. The Me and White Supremacy framework would have him examine his inner white supremacy for 28 days. Those are not equivalent responses to the same problem.

The argument is not that historical British policing was egalitarian. It is that the solution to historical failures of impartiality is more impartiality, not less. The current framework has produced less. Henry Nowak is the evidence.

@FraserNelson Crime stats are garbage. A friend of mine was attacked walking with his wife and daughter in the park. He suffered defensive knife wounds to his hand and arms requiring surgery.

Plod refused to take a statement or even give him a crime number.
