I love walking through the schools in @DGDistrict58 so I can visit with our Ss and staff. These Belle Aire Ss wanted me to see something “cool.” We’re starting our dissection unit and these are the lampreys that just arrived. It’s great seeing them excited to learn! #dg58pride
One of my favorite summer adventures so far was checking this off my bucket list. Meeting Xena, the sloth, my new BFF. If you know me, or have stepped foot in my classroom, you know the love I have for these animals 🤍🦥
After studying the tensions that led up to the American Revolution, King George III came to visit. He taxed the colonists for crazy things, they protested, boycotted his goods, chanted “No Taxation Without Representation”. The King was VERY unhappy with the colonists! #dg58pride
Working on identifying and sorting informational text structures in Power Half-Hour today! Being able to identify text structures will deepen our understanding of informational texts! #dg58pride#dg58learns#informationaltext
Discussing the tragic events of 9/11/01 is something I do every year with my students. We use newspapers from the days following the attacks. The students were mature, respectful and amazed at how the actions of a couple people impacted the world forever #PatriotDay#dg58pride
Thank you to the Belle Aire PTA for an awesome Back to School Bash! I had so much fun getting dunked, over and over again! @DGDistrict58#dg58pride#belleaire
Intro to our new science lesson - What causes substances to change? We used glow sticks today to observe the mixing of substances that react and make a new substance. Tomorrow, we’ll observe whether cooling them (in the freezer) helps them glow longer #dg58pride#fifthgraderocks
While we cannot do a typical “gallery walk” with partners to look at different states of matter and substances changing, we were about to do a six-feet socially distanced one! These kids rock at staying safe and have become experts at #SocialDistancing#dg58pride#science
We did some science work outside today to enjoy the sunshine. The wind was blowing and papers were flying, which led to some funny memories being made. Finished our time outside with Wax Museum for our mask break! #dg58pride#sciencerules#SocialDistancing#fifthgraderocks
We folded origami flowers, wrote our stressors, then hung them in a tree to say Farewell to them! We used biodegradable paper and string. Here are some pictures from #FarewellDay @McDermottdg58 #dg58pride#BArocks
Today, Belle Aire celebrated “Farewell Day”. Earlier in the year, sixth graders came up with new holidays. Farewell Day is a day to say farewell to our stressors, worries and other things from the past year. Thank you for putting this day together @McDermottdg58! #dg58pride
We found our leprechaun names (official names for today!) and are working together to help save the pot of gold! Multiplying fractions, whole numbers and mixed numbers will lead to the gold! #StPatricksDay#dg58pride#dg58learns
We are in the design and build process to start our Valentine’s Day #STEM project! We discussed civil engineers, their jobs and the supports and design needed to successfully build bridges! #dg58pride#STEM#CivilEngineering
Words of Wisdom Wednesday continued today, looking at a quote from the incredible Rosa Parks! Thinking about our role models and what qualities they possess that make them great influences. We can all be a good role model to others #BlackHistoryMonth#dg58learns#dg58pride
Today we started “Words of Wisdom Wednesday” in 5th grade. Each Wednesday, we will read a quote from an inspirational African American for #BlackHistoryMonth and interpret its meaning. Here is today’s quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and our thoughts. #BeKind#dg58pride
Day 1: I was nominated by
@JennyLehotsky. Every day I will post a picture of a day in the life of an educator. I’ll post without explanation & nominate someone else to take the challenge. That’s 7 days & 7 pictures. Today I nominate @McDermottdg58 #dg58pride
So here is the answer: 40,062,835 minutes. Which is about 76 years. It is remarkable that 400 teachers facilitated all of that learning on a platform most had never even used before. 🤯Thank you #dg58learns teachers!
We started our week thinking about heroes. We shared some qualities, occupations, people, etc., and what makes them heroes. We’ll continue to discuss heroes throughout the week as we honor Veterans Day! #VeteransDay#dg58pride#grateful#heroes
