PAT is fighting for fair wages, reasonable class sizes, and safe working conditions. Our strike has brought attention to the issues that we face every day, such as large class sizes, high temps in classes, rodent droppings, top heavy spending at the district level, and (1/2)
It's interesting that detractors of the Portland Teachers Strike are so focused on attacking the fiscal responsibility/greed of teachers wanting a living wage, rather than on a problematic District mgmt. w/bloated overhead, who, btw, control the funds. There's a disconnect here.
Which is to say, we're sure it will be exactly what you imagine it to be. Very orderly, w/students all listening to you with rapt engagement about your curriculum. None of them will have issues w/you or each other! Oh & the mouse turds will be gold gilded!
You'd still start at 57,000 with your MA. You would do the steps like every teacher in PPS has? In 12 years you'll get that 97k providing you get that 45+ in edu. MA credits. The idea of seeing someone like you handle a classroom though, it's quite a giggle to think about.

@KyleNetcher That's your pay for 192 days of work (non-teacher workers w/ 20 holidays/PTO days per year work ~240 days). How much money in benefits do you receive on top of that every year?
Also, judging by the PAT salary schedule, you only have 3 years of experience...so stop complaining.
@davidmedinaofa David, it seems to me from watching your posts that anyone who believes differently from you is the problem, at least to you. I'll ask again, do you have children going to PPS?
🚨Portland teachers are disrupting traffic by blocking the Burnside Bridge in hopes this will “send a message” to the district.
They seem to continue to not understand that they’re part of the problem.
@MrDanielBuck Incorrect information that is being shared. That is the very top tier, not average, of teachers that have been in the district for over 12 years and have a masters degree. Here is the ACTUAL starting salary for new teachers.
The Portland Teachers' Union has closed schools for a month now. Despicable.
What I find most astounding, though... media coverage (this article included) of the strikes conveniently ALWAYS leaves out what Portland teachers are actually paid on average: $87,000
@davidmedinaofa I've noticed several of your tweets posting videos of what looks like attempts to score talking points rather than honest dialogue. What gives with that? Also, do you have children attending PPS? #PortlandTeachersStrike
This morning we traveled to the picket line to talk to Portland teachers who are strike for the 2nd straight week.
Unfortunately, in the middle of having honest discussions with some of the picketers, @pdxteachers leaders interfered and discouraged people from talking to me.
We simply asked “Is it really about the kids?” and shared basic facts about Portland Public Schools. They didn’t like it.
Here’s me shaming the PAT leaders responsible. More videos to come. #Portland #Oregon
We'll have to disagree on this. School climate helps promote understanding, empathy, and positive behavior, not just for teachers but for the entire community. It's about building a respectful space where both academic and social interactions go smoothly and can thrive.
@TeachPortland Again. For the parents. I'm not misunderstanding a thing here. Parents will teach empathy and such 'Feelings' and responses teachers are to teach the Facts. Period. To think I disagree because I misunderstand is really priceless.
All due respect, Ms. Smiley, but the reality is that you're misunderstanding what is being said here. Restorative practices are about school climate & behavior mgmt & primarily for teachers. SEL, for students, I think is what you're worrying about - two very different things.
Reading the post farm 'hot-takes' on the PPS teacher strike is both amusing and bewildering. At some point they will figure out their mistake, but for now, this is a great way to spot groups trying to incite unrest. #PortlandTeachersStrike
Parents growing increasingly concerned over PPS strike length #MaineEducation#MaineEducation#Education#EducationMatters#Maine [Video] Some Portland Public Schools parents are worried a teacher strike could go on for a couple more weeks, as the union… https://t.co/42Em6C2J6Z
This has always been the case and we remain decidedly wanting to get back into our classrooms as soon as possible. This is about the district coming to the table in good faith.
@PNW_working_mom @davidpdxer @jrlsilverman@PPSConnect I’ve heard from teacher friends of family in Portland that the union is telling teachers they’ll pay their COBRA health insurance. So the two week strike scenario seems to be less likely now.
I spent some time last week marching in solidarity with teachers from #PAT here in Portland, Oregon where they have been on a historic strike for better, safer classrooms and fair wages. It was an honor to be with these educators and to see the outpouring of support we received from loudly honking cars! #PortlandPublicSchools #PPS #educators
Betsy DeVos is from Michigan (where I grew up) and is a 'fortunate' daughter (aka: nepo baby) that wants the voucher system which she fully plans to further profit off of. She was utterly incompetent in office and offered smoke & mirrors which MAGA bought into.
Portland teachers strike for the third week, demanding racial equity training alongside traditional negotiations.
The Portland Association of Teachers seeks higher pay, better conditions, and professional development addressing racial equity and implicit bias.
Critics, like Betsy DeVos, accuse unions of prioritizing political goals over students. #Portland #Education #Equity https://t.co/VaK1nAhAbg
Actually we have curriculum for common core. You're welcome to look into them. Racial equity trainings are more about how we treat each other and school climate that is restorative for students. Unified ways of addressing issues of equity for best outcomes for ALL students.
So instead of teaching facts like math, they want to teach opinions? THEIR opinions as gospel? AND get more money?

The problem here is that it's a very corporatist message you're sending. Why take power from the people and put it into the hands of those who seek to get rich off of school vouchers? Why not side with actively enriching the community that pounds the pavement?
