@ZBiodiversa Hola! Una pregunta- en la Plaza d la Marina donde está la terraza de La Pinta por la noche, se oye el canto de muchísimos pájaros. Saben que son?
Hi @MaryEhrenworth! I'm trying to put together a quick guide for TOEFL regarding the Argument Talk Protocol. Is there any benefit to adding a "referee" to declare a "winner" at the end- or is it better to keep it as just an an exercise?
When scoring IPAs, what "average" do you all recommend using-- mode/median/mean? e.g., on an interpretive task... there are 8 different subscores. If a student scored: 4, 4, 4, 4, 2, 2, 1, 1. Median=3, Mode=4. #assess4proficiency
@MmeMorgan1 Thanks! Yeah, that's one thing I want to look at next year after having done more reading. It's a hard sell with some teachers though, like you said.
@MmeMorgan1 Gotcha- Sorry, I don't think I was clear... those #'s are scores for each of the criteria on one summative assessment. I actually used the same rubric you posted. So, 4 on word recognition through organizational features, 2 on guessing meaning & inferences, 1 on author & cult psp
@natadel76 I also think it depends on the type of data you see, like you say... if it were 4 1 4 1 4 4, then I think you do need to use that mean and give a 3.25 --> B.
@natadel76 Thanks for the feedback! Do you tell students what section is the *focus* beforehand? I think I would say my method tends to be using the median (as this doesn't require any calculating), then the mean if there isn't a clear median. In this case, w/ my scale,-- median: B+, Mean B
@mllewilliams One potential objection I could hear teachers having would be that we're going from a 4 point scale back to the old 100 point scale (I realize this might be unavoidable for many teachers). What are your thoughts on just converting this to a "B" and hiding the percent?
@mllewilliams Thanks for the feedback. Interesting- It took me 3 years, but this is the first time I've ever successfully used this formula! (I had never replaced the 20...didn't read the instructions). So, with this I'm getting an 83.75% for this student.
