Police have confirmed the arrest of Umar, a 22-year-old from Faisalabad, for the brutal murder of Sana Yousaf. Sana had repeatedly rejected Umar’s advances. Despite her clear refusal, he continued to harass her — culminating in her tragic killing after she refused to see him on her birthday, May 29.

This is not a crime of passion. It is a crime rooted in entitlement, patriarchy, and the refusal to accept a woman’s no.

We must teach our sons, our brothers, and men across Pakistan that no means no.
Consent is not optional. Women are not property. They are not objects to be owned, pursued, or punished.

Until we challenge and dismantle this dangerous mindset — in homes, in schools, in media, and in law — these crimes will not stop.

This is not just a women’s issue. This is a societal emergency.

The historic case Reserved Seats case concerning the right to representation of women belonging to Pakistans largest political party is being heard in the Supreme Court.

My two cents on an important legal point: The word ELECTED in Article 51(6)(d) of the Constitution and the word ELECTION in Section 104(1) of the Elections Act, are liable to be construed in the same fashion as word ELECTION in Article 225 of the Constitution, as per the applicable jurisprudence which is to be found in ECP v Javed Hashmi PLD 1989 SC 396, according to which the word ELECTION covers the entire process from the issuance of the election schedule til the notification of the ECP returning a candidate. The words "ELECT" and "ELECTION" in etymology have the same roots. Thus, according etymological principles they have to be construed to have same or similar meanings.
Thus, when the independents joined the SIC and this was notified by ECP, then by no connotation could it be construed that SIC never participated in the election. In other words where a political party participates in even one step of the entire electoral process, it has to be construed to have participated in elections. Having come to the conclusion that SIC participated in the elections as its members are now MNAs/MPAs, the consequential effect is that SIC is now to be conferred the Reserved seats which were earlier stolen. Any other interpretation would equip the other parties with unjust enrichment which is against Articles 3,4,10A, 17 and 25 of the Constitution.

A 74 year old cancer survivor has been imprisoned for more than a year in false and fabricated cases. She is now hospitalised due to ill-health. Maryam Nawaz 's father, despite not being critically unwell as it later emerged, was provided care under Yasmin Rashid.

I know it's a tall order for the CM of Punjab because she is facilitating crackdown on dissent & detention of women. Nevertheless, Punjab Govt should try and show that they have some humanity left. Prayers for our brave Yasmin Rashid.
