This young widow in our compound suddenly stopped greeting people. She avoided conversations and looked constantly worried, unlike herself.

Then news came that the landlord had given her a quit notice. She had lost her job months earlier and had been hiding it from everyone. Her rent had been due since March. Even her children didn’t know.

Every morning, she still dressed up and left home pretending to go to work.
