Hyperkin previously sold a TG16/PCE AV adapter that omitted proper output buffering/conditioning and essentially connected expansion-bus signals straight to consumer equipment. When I publicly demonstrated the problem, Hyperkin admitted that keeping the design “as basic as it gets” was a calculated decision.

Now they’re selling power supplies.

Power is the LAST place you cheap out, cut corners, or accept “good enough” engineering. Get voltage regulation, protection, polarity, filtering, or transient behavior wrong and you’re no longer talking about a bad picture or flaky controller. You can damage irreplaceable hardware.

I cannot tell anyone this new product is unsafe without testing it. But given my documented experience with their engineering decisions, I would not connect one to ANY console I care about.

Update: We are working on a follow-up to the LG story and have some disturbing findings re: LG's products. It will take us a while to parse everything and we have involved multiple security researchers, lawyers (working on reading around 40,000 words of LG agreements that are, generally, terrifying in scope), and network experts, but will have an update for you all as soon as we can finalize collecting all of the information and parsing. There is a lot for us to crawl through (and I'm also already up to thousands of dollars in LG product purchases, but each one peels back another layer of the enshittified onion). This will be a fairly large research piece and will take time, but is also the worst I've seen so far in this 'genre' of product and agreements.

Yes, the software is called LG OnScreen Control Plus. it runs silently in the background. it tracks which applications you use, when you use them, and how long. it phones home to LG servers. it cannot be uninstalled through normal means without leaving registry traces.

gamers noticed because some anti-cheat systems flagged it as suspicious software. the monitor was getting people banned from games.

now the TV side:

LG also updated its webOS terms of service. if you use the AI voice features on your LG TV, the company says you may need to inform guests in your home that conversations could be recorded.

you. the homeowner. legally responsible for notifying anyone who walks into your living room that the television is listening.

LG built a surveillance device. sold it to you. and made the disclosure your legal problem.

so to recap what LG shipped this year:

a monitor that installs tracking software on your PC without asking.

a TV that records conversations in your home and requires you to warn your guests.

both devices look exactly like a monitor and a TV.

neither one tells you what it actually is at the point of sale.

you found out when your game banned you.

"Bloomberg's organization is funding this," Louis Rossmann said about the 3D printing legislation that aims to control what you're allowed to print (and potentially leads to closed sourcing of 3D printing). At 8:30 AM Pacific Time today, there is a 'public safety committee' hearing in Sacramento that will serve as the last time people can speak publicly in opposition to 3D printing legislation which aims to control what you print -- possibly resulting in forcefully feeding 3D prints through online corporate servers and potentially leading to the 3D printing community going more closed-source with more government oversight.

There are likewise implications for open source 3D printing hardware and software, which could face restrictions and enshittification.

Louis Rossmann will be speaking with the committee and is hoping viewers show up at least to just be a presence and show the committee that people care, or at best, to speak about why these kinds of laws are damaging to ownership while not achieving what they claim to achieve.

If you can make it today, please attend to show your opposition to this controlling legislation that benefits the consolidation of printing into fewer private corporations. This is how we get monopolization in 3D printing, because it benefits companies that play ball with forcing internet connections.

Although claimed to be targeted at "bad shapes," this sort of technology could also feasibly be used to scan prints and determine if they are breaching intellectual property -- the monster character you personally modeled and want to print for fun could be blocked by object detection in the future of 3D printing for resembling, say, a Pokemon. Obviously, feeding prototypes and artwork through corporate servers also could lead to being ripped off, to data breaches (that lead to being ripped off), or just to eventually feeding your prints into some sort of AI learning server to either rip you off or analyze the cylinder you printed and determine it's a bad cylinder, not a good cylinder.

This is important. It is physically impossible for GN to make it out there in time due to the distance, but we will be covering this and trying to attend hearings on other similar issues as we become aware of them.
