@standupmaths have you ever tried doing something nerdy in astrophotography before? If you pull it off they might rename a 90% partial to a ‘Parker eclipse’ in your honour…
In the evening of August 12, 2026 a (-90%) eclipse will be visible across the UK. During the eclipse, a number of Starlink satellites will transit across the face of the sun as seen from the ground.
Anyone along these paths could capture the astronomy photo of their lives!
One of the paths lies just 20km from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich (the home of British astronomy). The event may even be visible from the observatory itself. @ROGAstronomers I urge you to see if it’s possible.
@holland_tom@TheRestHistory Great listen (and something never taught about in the anglosphere)!
The first time I had ever heard of Caporetto was an Italian mate of mine describing a football match they lost. In Italian today the word itself just means catastrophic defeat - Italian ‘Waterloo’.
@Raspberry_Pi A lot of your hobbyist fans are beginners. I think examples can be inspiring and encouraging, whereas a flood of technical language can be a bit over whelming…
Really encouraged by this pod in any case, and intrigued to see what comes next!
@Raspberry_Pi Great to see this! Lots of discussion on new specs and features in the abstract, but would really like to see / hear some real use cases. Could you maybe demo some projects that make use of these next time?
@real1314@BBCNewsnight Alas, the gov claims the interest as ‘profit’ for accounting purposes re: fiscal rules etc. They will presumably count the wiping as a ‘loss’. This means that the interest is very real and impacts the government’s borrowing costs. More interest, more tax.
@BBCNewsnight We can choose to lower rates now before this turns into a financial catastrophe. Otherwise we will have a generation that will be unable to save enough during their peak earning years, presumably when state pensions will be much less generous.
@BBCNewsnight The interest rates are vitally important. The cost to the taxpayer of wiping £100ks per student in ~20 years will be gargantuan, and the taxpayers du jour will be the plan 2 cohort! Their 9% loan will surely be replaced with a commensurate rise in income tax!
@googlechrome - your new update has disabled dark mode extensions when viewing PDFs! Makes reading impossible with a visual impairment! Please fix this, having to manage with Edge now as a workaround is awful 😭
We had a fried chicken store called Pope Yes this whole time and we're surprised when he turns out to be an American? It's been staring us in the face all along...
@holland_tom Historical Hypothetical - Would the Ancient Greeks think we're a bit simple for our animal names? Researchers study for years and come up with names like "scary lizard" and "Darwin's wings"
@NateSilver538 Is there data on how registered dems differ in their opinions vs independents? Theres a decent probability an open primary doesn’t result in a candidate with more moderate (and more widely popular) positions, just another party favourite…
@PatrickEBoyle Love your vids Patrick! I ask my US colleagues about their views on the economy and they always give negative views- it’s all groceries and gas prices. “If wages go up, the employee earned it, if gas goes up, it’s the presidents fault.” Inflation is a real mood killer.
