@9BillionTigers Oh, it's certainly very intentional, and it's a rich text. It's just the actual experience of reading it is quite boring, and not what most people would expect given its reputation.
@ChadNotChud Later in the book, Bella gives her own alternative, realist telling of her life story. As much as McCandless genuinely loves his wife, it is also strongly implied that he (literally) infantilizes her in this fantasy narrative because of a massive inferiority complex.
@ChadNotChud It’s complicated. The book is post-modern and told through many different perspectives and layers. The movie only shows the innermost layer, which is Bella‘s story *as told by McCandless*. This is an important aspect that doesn’t make it through to the adaptation.
