There are a lot of people on X right now talking about going to church for the first time or asking about Christ and God, and they don’t know where to start. I don’t know who, if any of you, I’m writing this for. But I hope it finds and helps at least one of you. I’ve spent most of my life as an agnostic or Deist at best. I had an experience last year that I’m not ready to talk about yet. But let me just tell you all that a Demon proved to me that the afterlife is real. That Demon was an honest-to-goodness metaphysical, spiritual horror, not the physical horror that we’ve all witnessed recently. But that story isn’t relevant right now. So let me get back to what is relevant. I've spent most of my life arguing against the things about Christianity I don't believe in. I could write a novel about all of the things in standard Christian dogma I don’t believe in. I don't think the bible is literal, I don't think the earth was made in 7 days, I don’t think all the animals fit on the arc, I don't think you have to speak in tongues to show that you've been saved. I could go on and on about all the things I don't believe in. You probably have similar or different questions about what you think Christianity is or isn't. You probably also have bad pastors who have given you a poor example of Christ's teachings, or hell maybe you’ve run into people like me, who have given you a bad example of what Christianity is. Don’t let those bad examples stop you from pursuing the promptings you’re getting right now. Don't let the bad examples of men stop you from taking the first steps to learn who the Divine God is. So rather than wasting more time on what I don’t believe, let me tell you what I do believe: God is real. In a very real, very Awe-inspiring, AWEsome, terrifying, and humbling way, God is real. He is so overwhelming, so immense, so powerful that we cannot fully comprehend what He is. For when we are fully confronted with the true magnitude of His Presence, it puts our mortal bodies face down in the mud. I know because I’ve been there. God made me (and you) with a purpose in mind. I don’t understand that purpose. Sometimes, like a petulant child, I rage against that purpose or demand to know or understand things that don’t make sense to me. God loves me and protects me from the consequences of those petulant demands and guides me on that purpose anyway. Here’s the real crux of what you need to understand about Christianity. God loves us so much that he sent his Son to do the most courageous, painful, heroic, horrific, terrifying thing that any man has ever done. And that was not just dying on the cross. The pain of crucifixion was a drop in the bucket to the ocean of agony that Christ suffered for us. God's son, Jesus Christ, picked up the unimaginable weight of all of our sins and suffering, and while he bore the weight of that immeasurable suffering, he willingly walked into death for three days. During that time he punched his way into hell and grabbed the keys of death and sin and then dragged those keys back out. He did that amazing, impossible, heroic feat because I was too weak to do any of that and He loved me so much that He didn’t want me to suffer that burden. He did that for me, and he did that for you. He knows we are imperfect and he did an impossible thing so that we could be forgiven for that imperfection. Start with that understanding and hold onto that. We can spend our whole lives arguing over dogma, misinterpretations of the bible, or inconsequential disagreements over what we don’t believe or don’t understand. Forget all that. Start small with one small mustard seed of what you can believe in. Faith is not knowing that God is real. Faith is choosing to live your life in accordance with Christ’s teaching, even in the face of your own ignorance of God's existence. Don’t make my mistake, don’t spend all your energy arguing against what you think God isn’t. Instead, spend your time to go looking for what God actually is. It doesn’t matter where on that path you are take the first step. PS – and this last bit is only for the hard-hearted bone heads like me, please don’t make the mistake of petulantly demanding of God that he prove himself that he is real. He might answer that prayer, and trust me, you don’t want that.
