Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark on if the Big 12 Championship goes away. Mentions wanting an alternate game but also a replacement event for that first weekend in December, possibly basketball:
Ditching conference title games almost erases the meaning of conference titles, and they really do become simply groups with pooled media rights. If that's all they are, why wouldn't Miami, Ohio State, Michigan, etc., eventually go indie or form their own/smaller groups?
NEW: Bowl game directors met today in Irving, Texas - one of them called it a "Last Supper" ๐

How many bowls survive when CFP goes to 24 teams in 2027

The group of 6 conference heads/athletic directors need to make a move to somehow save bowls. The Power 4 will probably start opting out of almost everything but the playoff. But Iโm still probably personally watching Tulsa vs. Texas State in the Texas Bowl if itโs on TV.
Theyโre going to use this to lock the ACC and Big 12 out of major nonconference games, and then use โweak nonconferenceโ as justification to put 18 Big Ten and SEC teams into the 24-team playoff.

If I'm the ACC or Big 12 I'm viewing this as a duopoly beginning to form. The goal of course is to keep the SEC / Big Ten so far ahead in SOS that they get the majority of CFP bids and keep the B12/ACC as one or two-bid leagues.
It's also designed to affect recruiting but telling recruits "if you don't go to an SEC school you'll never get to play Ohio State or Georgia and will be stuck playing a 2nd tier schedule".
It's no mystery to me that it's coming out at a time that the Big 12 has more Top 10 football programs than the SEC does. Sankey has been beside himself since NIL evened the playing field and eliminated the "bagman advantage" the SEC had over everyone. Now he's led the charge of cutting out the Big 12 and ACC with this scheduling agreement.
It's a defacto duopoly. The Big 12 and ACC should probably be bringing in some attorneys, but I have yet to see Brett Yormark lift a pinky toe to fight for his conference. He didn't lobby for BYU to go to the CFP last year, he's hasn't challenged anything the SEC has done. I think he's afraid of Sankey -- if he isn't then he's just an incompetent commissioner.
Nine years ago, Kalani Sitake was brought nearly to tears when almost no fans showed up for his weekly football show amidst a seven-game losing streak.
Now, BYU football is No. 2 in the country. What a story.

I don't know what Oklahoma State paid Florida star Liv McGill. But the four diamond chains she was wearing at Big 12 media day, along with the addition of superstar Audi Crooks, tells me that Oklahoma State is writing some real NIL checks in Stillwater.
Our current Big 12 projections:
As glamorous as a win over ND is, the true playoff ticket will come from making the Big 12 title game. That likely requires beating Utah H2H. We have Utah projected to win at home, in turn giving BYU the worst playoff chances of the three. Still high, but the lowest of the three.
