Over the last two MLB seasons if your team was top 5 in payroll they made the playoffs 90% of the time. If your team was bottom 5 in payroll they made the playoffs 10% of the time… Money may not be everything in baseball, but it means an awful lot. #MLB
@SamBlum3@SuperHaloBros And honestly who cares about our prospects doing well in the minors. I care about them doing well in the majors. And something tells me that just won’t happen.
Rob Manfred said in October 2024 that MLB had a "darn good" record on competitive balance. Back in 2018, he said the correlation between winning and spending was "extraordinarily weak."
Now, he says MLB's luxury-tax system has failed:

@ChatterAngels You must be young. This happens every so often and neither the owners nor the players care what the fans think. They both know they’ll be back when it’s all settled.
@Perello617@BNightengale There will always be lousy teams. A floor and a cap can’t prevent that. Nothing can. But a floor and a cap can certainly help.
@ronniewohlert@Igotburners Dodgers fans are delusional. They actually think spending billions of dollars on their payroll has nothing to do with their last two championships.
MLB response: ‘We appreciate the union making a set of proposals and we look forward to continuing the bargaining process and working towards solving the competitive balance problem our fans are telling us needs to be addressed. We understand their proposals are designed to benefit players. Unfortunately, they do not address and in fact exacerbate the competitive balance problem our fans are telling us we must address. The MLBPA’s proposal would reduce the amount transferred to lower-revenue Clubs, weaken the Competitive Balance Tax, and lead to even more payroll disparity than exists today. For example, under the Union’s proposal, the Dodgers would pay less in luxury tax payments, giving them an additional $70 million to spend on payroll.”
Rob Manfred says there's a $446 million gap between MLB's smallest and highest team payrolls.
"That's not a fair fight...fans want competition, and that’s what it’s about at the end of the day, and that’s what we need to get fixed."
@LTBU_2002 You sound exactly like the type of person Arte was talking about- someone who doesn’t put winning in their top 5 priorities. Maybe sports are not for you.
@davet79@MikeDiGiovanna@LockedOnAngels It’s not all Arte. But it’s mostly Arte. And why do you think he hired a rookie GM? He doesn’t want any GM to tell him what to do. Instead he wants to tell the GM how it’s going to be.
