“The occupation that’s taken place has woken so many of us up to the fact that we are all part of what’s happening with this... It directly affects everyone. And so we’ve shown how community pulls together.”

MAJOR: Twin Cities Tenants joins five labor unions, together repping 25,900 members, to launch a rent strike drive, vowing to withhold rent March 1 if @GovTimWalz fails to deliver an eviction moratorium and rent relief. If launched, the largest US rent strike in 100+ years.
In @Bisnow: “Mr. Eichler and Capital Realty Group have the opportunity to do the right thing, which is in the interest of all involved parties: return to the bargaining table and sign an agreement with the unions. As of now, they are failing to do so."

Kansas City tenants are declaring victory after an 8- month rent strike. Their old landlord was ousted, and they have a signed agreement with the new one that caps rents + guarantees repairs. More details from @KCTenants and @TenantFed for @inthesetimesmag (link below).
"Absent meaningful action from the government, the question is not whether tenants will revolt, but whether the revolt will be from a place of desperation or a place of power. To ensure the latter, tenants are organizing unions"

"The Tenant Union Federation (@TenantFed) is fostering a wave of tenant leaders who have been pushed to the margins—many of them elderly, disabled, low-income—as they aim to transform renters into a powerful political class."

Spent last weekend training @LouTenantsUnion and this weekend training @KCTenants. As the takes continue swirling, tenants are getting in formation to exercise our ultimate power: our rent. If we have a chance, the chance lives in the tenant union ❤️🔥
If the regulators agree to stay the night (unlikely), they live momentarily what the tenants live daily- mold, roaches, asbestos…
If they don’t, they show that they wouldn’t accept these conditions for even one night, but they’re comfortable subjecting us to them.
@TenantFed But why is staying the night such an important thing for this matter? And how will that move things forward in a positive direction? And if such a thing does happen I would say Friday night and they must stay till 2:00 p.m. the following day to get a full understanding.
For years tenants have woken up to bugs crawling on them, undrinkable water, inches of standing water in their bathtub, and holes in the ceiling with actual shit raining down on them.
This response isn't just negligent, it's cruel.
