There's a 70 second clip of that Zhang - Tóth match widely circulating (even outside Tennis Twitter circles) which doesn't really contextualise what actually happened. This thread is the best I've seen at laying out the timeline of events that sadly led to Zhang retiring.
Okay ... so ... since people here are jumping to all sorts of conclusions based on the selected timeframe of one clip on Twitter, I decided to mosey over to the replay to see what the heck happened. Because there was surely more to it.
And indeed, there was.
A thread!!!
When she’s on Xinyu has some absolutely devastating groundstrokes from the back of the court. As she got into this match she was hitting some superb winners at crucial moments. Helps having an experienced partner like Su-Wei to ease her nerves.
What a great advert for womens tennis, the last two rounds were absolutely electric. Muchova what a player, she came back magnificently, in the slam final it is quite rare, but Iga with the nest comeback in her life💪.😊😊
Glad Karolina was able to turn this match around after it looked like it was going away fast. Very exciting in the end. Excellent showing in her first (hopefully not last) slam final.
