Wow time flys, we look like our own children at the Toy Story 1 image. The aging Buzz and Woody currently in London telling wonderful fans all about the new Toy Story 5 coming June 19. “To infinity and beyond!”
Grieving the loss of one of my best friends, Jim Lovell. His extraordinary legacy is cemented by many space missions: Gemini VII, Gemini XII, Apollo 8 and Apollo 13.
Our mutual respect had no limits. The Gemini XII mission we flew together paved the way for the Apollo missions.
Heartfelt condolences to Jim’s family.
Farewell Jim. You will be missed, my friend. Godspeed!
SPLASHDOWN!! On July 24th, 1969, we landed softly in the vast Pacific Ocean – and after eight humanity-changing days, our mission was complete. The great crew from the legendary @USNavy USS Hornet (CV-12) was there to see our prompt extraction from the deep! 56 years hence, #Apollo11 still amazes me – and I appreciate all of you for being with me to remember and recognize that important and historic endeavor.
July 20, 1969. “Contact light, engine stop.” The Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle touched down at Tranquility Base on the Moon.
A few hours later, Neil Armstrong and I stepped foot on the Moon, with Michael Collins orbiting close-by.
An achievement resulting from years of incalculable effort, commitment, and team work.
We all did our part to see President Kennedy’s words become reality: “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others too.”
I couldn’t be prouder to have completed this mission with the hundreds of thousands of people that helped get us to the moon and back home. God bless the USA and all of humankind.
On this day, July 16th 1969, we were “GO” for launch – and at precisely 13:32 UTC, #Apollo11 lifted off from @NASAKennedy to transport three mortal Americans – Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and myself – to the Moon. The hard work, dedication and focus across the entire @NASA enterprise came down to this – even though it was only the beginning of our journey. But as Walter Cronkite remarked at the time, “The dawn of this day heralded the dawning of a new age. It’s a time of exhilaration, reflection, hope, fulfillment – as a centuries’ old dream starts toward reality.”
Less than a week to go for the launch of #Apollo11 – I remember that last week before we lifted off (56 years ago) was a busy one with final preparation and testing. Training flights in helicopters, T-38s, and the parabolic aircraft, to time in the Lunar and Command Module simulators and lots of meetings! Meanwhile, the @USNavy conducted several simulation exercises in preparation for our eventual recovery. Legions of great Americans were working around the clock to ensure success. The preliminary @NASA countdown for launch began on July 11.
Officially starting the countdown to the anniversary of #Apollo11 today. You may recall that a few months ago, India’s Space Research Organization moon orbiter Chandrayaan 2 captured photos of both the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 lunar modules on the Moon’s surface. They may be small in size – but those landers represent one of humankind’s most noble and successful accomplishments.

Today marks the 249th #USMCBirthday of the U.S. Marine Corps – a service built with patriotic Americans, a rich history, and great valor. From 1775 to today, the @USMC has been protecting America with distinction, in the air, on land, and sea. I’m beyond proud to have served with many #Marines over the years – in uniform, in the space program, and after. Happy Birthday Marines and Semper Fi!
