I want to set some things down that are very important and not often understood in the church today. This will affect the way we read and apply the Old Testament scriptures to ourselves for our daily lives, and it will affect the way we see judgment day. Remember, 1 Peter 4:17 says "Judgment begins first with the household of God" and that day is so close we can taste it.

Here is a perspective that will help us:
The promises of God have always been made to a PEOPLE of God, not to a bloodline as Paul explains in Romans 4. It so happens that the message went out to the Jewish people first, so at first most of God's people were of Jewish bloodline, but outsiders were always allowed in if they had faith to join in.

By now in our modern time the composition of God's people is mostly gentile, because the church has been grafted into the root. There is only ONE ROOT. There is only ONE FAITH. It’s not replacement theology but a grafting in. It’s not a physical lineage because it was always through faith. And it’s not dispensationalism, because there have always been just one people of God, not a distinction into perpetuity between Jew and gentile.

There is ONE people of God. So the WHOLE WORD OF GOD is for the ONE PEOPLE OF GOD.

And there is ONE GOD who does not change. Yes, He has changed the system between the Old and New covenants. He has changed some of His standards (i.e. no animal sacrifices, no dietary laws) and He has fulfilled many of His prophecies.

A thorough study of the Bible and a careful listening to what God is saying now to our hearts reveals that God still loves His word, the Bible-all of it-and He wants us to know it and follow it well. And if we need anything else, He reveals it to us individually by the Holy Spirit and through His servants, the prophets.

If we keep these things in mind we won't tend to give less credence to the Old Testament scriptures than we ought to. And we won't tend to think God will be easier on the church than he was on the Jews on judgment day. There is ONE PEOPLE OF GOD and ONE GOD WHO DOES NOT CHANGE. It will help us to keep these things in mind in the coming days.

These are independent witnesses, all of whom died over the last few years and visited heaven and were sent back to earth to give us a warning. Each testimony gives a different perspective, but they all converge on the notion that soon the secrets of men's hearts will be disclosed, and they all agree on the same basic timing: December/January 2025.

The point is, it won't cost you a dime to look at the massive amount of information God has painstakingly revealed over the last ten years on Living Water Press. It hasn't been easy to receive or transmit! There is so much to learn. Don't wait. There are things that are on offer now that will not be on offer once His day hits. Sometimes we have to step out in obedience BEFORE all is undeniably disclosed. The best rewards await those who do.

And speaking of Romans 11:18-24 (see my last post) here is another little soap box which I also think should carry significant weight in our thinking—Just a bit of advice from someone who has logged quite a few years in the Christian community—enough to see the murky WHY behind what is commonly taught and believed without question in our assemblies.

It starts with Romans 11:18-24 which says,

“But you must not brag about being grafted in to replace the branches that were broken off. . .”

[context—the old covenant was broken and the people were judged. In the New Testament God makes a new covenant. Paul uses the analogy of a tree with its branches broken off (OT saints) and new branches grafted in (NT believers)]

“. . . You are just a branch, not the root. ‘Well,’ you may say, ‘those branches were broken off to make room for me.’ Yes, but remember—those branches were broken off because they didn’t believe in Christ, and you are there because you do believe. So don’t think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen. For if God did not spare the original branches, he won’t spare you either. Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree. You, by nature, were a branch cut from a wild olive tree. So if God was willing to do something contrary to nature by grafting you into his cultivated tree, he will be far more eager to graft the original branches back into the tree where they belong.”

So again, keeping in mind my last post that there is a huge slew of people in the church who don’t want to see God as the God of judgment, but only as the God of grace and mercy —-you can imagine they’re pretty uncomfortable with these verses in Romans 11.

And the way they try to explain them away is by saying something about how God judged the nation of Israel, but now he deals with individuals. It never really made much sense to me.

Basically, I would just say tread carefully with any “national” versus “individual” argument you may encounter —the reason for making a national versus individual distinction is to relieve individuals in the church from a type of judgment from God which fell upon Israel in the Old T).

Here’s the point—God always has and always will judge individuals in the final analysis. Individuals enter covenants one by one, not nations as a whole. Romans 4 as well as Romans 9-11 shows that God’s promises were to people of faith of any nation—not to all of the people who were physically circumcised.

God’s promises were never to a bloodline without exception, but to people of God who had the faith of Abraham.

Maybe that is a little heady for an X post. I don’t mean to be obtuse. It’s just that there are so many ways people are taught that God doesn’t judge his people or that God won’t judge his people like he did in the Old Testament. And I think that’s pretty sad because judgment day is close — and people are going to be really surprised when His day hits.

I have hopped up on a little band wagon here today. But I think this is important.

Recently, at one of those awkward holiday gatherings I got into a long conversation (ok it was more of an argument). I was stunned by this other person’s emphasis on the importance of WHO each book of the Bible was written to over what the books said. It just seemed like common sense to me to see the Bible as a book that God has progressively revealed to various people at various times to affect and speak to all people at all times.

From that perspective, extra biblical information regarding the who, the when, and the why scripture was written is interesting, but it’s not something that will fundamentally change the way we interpret the Bible.

So this other person really surprised me. And I realized it’s by far not the first time in my life I’ve seen it.

Why did it rub me so wrong? I finally figured it out.

Basically it roots from those who see a big contrast between the strict/anger/judgment perspective of the Old Testament as distinct from the merciful/grace/loving aspect of the New Testament. They prefer the gracious/loving perspective of the New Testament, and do not wish to be put under the strict/anger/judgment perspective of the Old Testament.

They therefore repel any suggestion that the promises/judgments slated for Israel are consistent with the promises/judgments slated for the church. Because if the God with whom we have to do as new covenant believers is the same as the God who judged His people and sent them into captivity for 490 years, then they might have to live a bit more circumspectly than their “grace” theology allows them to live.

On the other side of the aisle are the people who see the differences in the old and New Testament as a matter of emphasis only, not as a truly different way that God will interact with all of his people for all time.

We see the church as the future promise Jeremiah spoke of, for example, when God says he will put his laws into their hearts. Notice in Jeremiah 31:33, that this is a covenant God makes with Israel, and it’s repeated and Hebrews as a covenant that God makes with the church.

People seeing the God of the Old Testament as the same in nature and treatment as the God of the New Testament have no problem with Paul when he says the church is made up of Jew and Gentile, with no distinction, because they see that God hasn’t changed. Rather there has been a change in covenant, and there has been a change in emphasis. The age of grace emphasized grace, and the age of law emphasize law and obedience. But it’s the same God, who hasn’t changed, and judgment day will see us all on the same level playing field.

By the way, have you ever read Romans 11:18-24? God is the same yesterday today and forever. We shouldn’t be attempted to think “God used to be this way, but now he’s this way.” Or “he used to really nail people, but he’s going to brush all of the Church’s sins under the carpet.”

While God did speak to individual people throughout history, His word is to all of his people for all time. He lives in the eternal now 😇. He speaks in light of eternity. And He doesn’t change.

I have been thinking about how in the last day we're going to be presented spotless and blameless before the throne (Colossians 1:22, Eph 5:27, Jude 24). The way I used to envision this happening is that God will do a miracle and "poof" we'll all be clean. But I'm rethinking that.

Today I was praying and I simply asked God, "How do we become spotless?" And this is what I heard.

"Whenever you demonstrate that you are 100% surrendered to Me in every area, I give you this spotlessness as a free gift. There is no way that you can deserve this or perfect yourselves, HOWEVER you are VERY involved in this process. As I bring You through trials and you continually relent about every area of stronghold of sin that I show you, I do this spiritual work in your soul.

You will know that you are being TRANSFORMED as opposed to just trying to do better when you realize you are no longer on the hamster wheel of sin/repent sin/repent sin/repent. But instead you look at an area that you once had no victory in, and you realize you have NO APPETITE for that sin anymore. If the occasion presents itself to you, there is just NO INTEREST in it. You don’t have to repent of that sin anymore because you have no appetite to do it anymore and you are completely free from it. THAT’S CALLED TRANSFORMATION. That is SANCTIFICATION. I GIVE YOU THIS AS A FREE GIFT when you have demonstrated to Me a surrendered heart in that area.

It is the work of the last day to bring to a head all these hamster wheel sin/repent sin/repent issues in your heart, and once you’ve surrendered in all areas, I free you from that sin. And whom the Son has set free, he shall be free indeed. That is the process we will go through so that I may present you faultless, without spot on the last day.

You are VERY MUCH involved in this process, and if you think I am going to do all this work while you sit idly by or while you are taking a nap or while you are pursuing your normal course of pleasures and sins, think again. The process of coming to full surrender is incredibly painful. And the Tribulation Period is My last chance to bring you to full surrender before you die. It is MUCH to your advantage to repent before you die, obviously. So for the next few years this is the thing that We will be working on."

I guess that about sums it up. We can't make ourselves perfect, but nor is the process of our becoming perfect going to happen without our intense involvement. It's a process.

Thoughts on the empty nest and social awkwardness at holiday gatherings . . .

So I had a little light go on in my mind this last week. It was Thanksgiving, and I was going to be in two places, both of which had their own nerve-inducing circumstances with lots of unknowns. And while some people are great with this--they just sort of roll with the punches--I would have to say not knowing what I'm supposed to be doing or saying is not my favorite thing!

And yet it turned out great. I was rather surprised how great it turned out actually, because I'd been stressing about it for weeks.

And then it dawned on me WHY it turned out great--It was because I had put myself to work. Quite by accident, and certainly not as a means of combatting any anticipated feelings of insecurity, I made a plan for making a lot of food. No one was really expecting me to do this since the main meal was already being taken care of, but I just got it in my head to make a bunch of side dishes to go along with whatever was on offer. And I spent most of the holiday making them. Not only were they useful when the turkey was delayed by like two hours, but it consumed my attention and time. It gave me something to do which others benefited from.

So quite by accident I discovered my answer to social awkwardness during the holidays! Instead of standing around wondering what to do or (true confession) wishing I could have a conversation with someone about my books, I was BUSY. This was big for me.

And then an even more profound thought lit up the dark recesses of this remarkably slooooooow mind of mine--That is exactly what Jesus did.

Think about it. He came, GOD in the flesh, and He dwelt among us. But He wasn't of us. I mean when I say "us" I don't mean to suggest we were there. But can you imagine? What did Jesus have to talk about with the general run of the mill guy on the street? What shared interests did they have? His whole life in our world could have easily been for him like every uncomfortable holiday meal you've ever spent with estranged family members or people you have nothing in common with.

But Jesus didn't just stand around with his hands in his pockets wondering what to do while everyone was drinking and talking smack. He put Himself to work. In every situation, He made tasks for Himself to do. And in working and serving others, sometimes, maybe, he got to open HIs mouth and say something really meaningful which they could hear BECAUSE He'd been serving them. But if not, He was busy. And appreciated.

I don't know why this finally struck me this week after 56 years on this planet. But now I have my solution for social discomfort: Make a plan so I'll have something to do (something that actually requires effort and time) for someone else, or plan to pitch in and do whatever no one else wants to do (like clean up). It's not rocket science, and I am kinda ashamed to admit that it took me this long to figure it out. Especially since as a mom of 3 little kids that's what I used to do. And my kids loved me, and my husband appreciated me all those years. It worked then. Now that I'm almost an empty nester that doesn't have to change.
