When I heard about Senator Graham’s death last night, the first thing I thought about was not all the things he said and did in service of Donald Trump. I thought of the time before Donald Trump when he was a brother to Senator John McCain.

A time when senators from different parties could fight about politics and still be friends. A time when a conservative Republican from South Carolina could say of my father: “If you can’t admire Joe Biden as a person, you’ve got a problem. He’s the nicest person I’ve ever met in politics. As good a man as God ever created.”

That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love.

I will choose to remember the time before Trump. Because I believe in an America after Trump.

This is a Kualakai (kū'-ă-lă-kā'i) or Spanish Dancer. These disk shaped, vibrant red sea slugs have ribbon like edges that undulate like a flamenco dancer’s skirt 💃 when they’re swimming.

They are circular and grow to be 16” wide. They feel like a tough and meaty frisbee. I rescue them all of the time from tide pools at low tide where they would dry up in the sun. They don’t have stingers or fangs so they aren’t venomous but they are poisonous if you eat them. Don’t eat them.

They suck up toxins from other creatures, like toxic sponges 🧽 , and use them for their own chemical defense.

They’re crazy red. Like bright fire engine 🚒 or Ferrari red. Their really red red🚨is a warning sign to other creatures and lets them know this guy is not something you want to eat.

The first time you see one in a dried up tide pool, you will think someone barfed up their stomach or maybe gave birth on the reef. 🪸

History is the harshest critic...

"Forty-nine years and 363 days from now, if and when we hit our 300th anniversary as a country, I'm telling you, whatever media we have then will be looking back at us, and will be looking at what we did this weekend," Maddow said on MS NOW.

"They'll be looking back at this 250th anniversary. What are we going to say we did?" she asked. We couldn't agree more. Trump hijacked what should have been a unifying, celebratory occasion for everyone in this country and turned it into yet another braindead, partisan MAGA-fest. His speech — after being repeatedly delayed by inclement weather because even Mother Nature is sick of him at this point — was a noxious mixture of lies, self-aggrandizement, and hateful smears.

Imagine the speech that President Obama would have given if he was in office when this 250th anniversary occurred. It would have been full of soaring rhetoric, heartfelt reflections on the best that this country has to offer, and deeply inspiring. Instead, we got a demented pedophile rambling into a microphone.

When Trump is finally gone, when his stench is fumigated out of the Oval Office and his spray tan washed off the Resolute Desk with a power hose, only then will America begin to fully calculate the damage he inflicted.

Future generations will look back and wonder how we allowed such a cruel, ignorant, incompetent man to hold us hostage for so long.
