Maturity is choosing peace over drama, distance over disrespect, boundaries over their feelings, solitude over fake company, resonance over history, progress over perfection, discipline over comfort zone, self-love over seeking validation, and saying "no" over people-pleasing.
This week I asked students 5 questions to help build a culture of learning:
1. How do you learn new info best?
2. How do you like to show your learning to others?
3. What are you curious about?
4. What are your learning strengths?
5. What attributes do you need in a teacher?
This is great. In getting to know your students, I always ask who you work well and opposite. It helps in getting to know them as sometimes that friend is the one who distracts them from their learning and they need your help to stay focused.
5 ways to build agency on the first day of school:
1. Build a Learning Strengths Wall. What do you bring to our community of learners?
2. Co-design some essential agreements & collaborative norms. What do you need to learn best?
3. Plan with curiosity in mind. What do you wonder about?
4. Talk less. Ask & listen more. The more scholars talk, the more the classroom becomes theirs.
5. Get to know your scholars. Agency thrives when strong trust & relationship are abundant.
5 seeds to plant on the first day of school:
1. Agency: voice & choice.
2. Curiosity: lessons that spark awe.
3. Equity: all can succeed.
4. Wellness: calm, confident & joyous spaces.
5. Competency development: HOW we learn matters.
Intentional starts create inspiring ends.
We are pleased to introduce the new HIS Secondary Principal for the 2023/24 academic year, Mr. Terry Linton. Mr. Terry has a rich background in teaching and leading MYP and DP schools and will be joining us in Hanoi with his wife and 2 daughters.
Welcome to HIS.
Starting July 2023, I shall be the Secondary Principal at Hanoi International School. I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity to join this fantastic community of learners. @DaunYorke@HISVietnam
@sjtylr@DaunYorke@HISVietnam Thank you Stephen! I used your line (and credited you) that my job is to make things easier for people to do things better, I paraphrased. I think that's why they gave me the job!
@Bmcmanus_7 @fang_wangNIST@DaunYorke@HISVietnam Thanks Brian, we are so pumped about the location, the school and the leadership at the school. Just everything coming together nicely. Hope you and the family are doing well back home!
