Today, while studying about the historic Chargola–Longai Exodus of 1921, also known as the Muluk Chalo Movement, I was deeply moved by the sacrifices of our tea garden community.

During the British era, “Labour Line” huts were constructed for plantation, workers — symbols of exploitation under colonial rule. In Chargola–Longai, too nearly 20 huts and around 100 souls were part of that painful chapter of history.

Even after 75+ years of Independence, the term “Labour Line” still exists in many tea garden areas. The name itself reminds us of colonial oppression and the hardships faced.

Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam Dr @himantabiswa Ji, the Government of Assam has taken several historic initiatives for the welfare of tea garden communities — building schools, providing additional eggs for school children meal, implementing welfare schemes, granting land pattas, improving healthcare, and ensuring dignity and development.

However, perhaps it is time to reflect — should the name “Labour Line,” rooted in colonial terminology, continue to exist?

Can we consider renaming these areas in honour of the martyrs and brave tea garden workers of Assam who sacrificed their lives fighting British oppression? A name that reflects pride, sacrifice, and identity rather than colonial subjugation.

Remembering history is important — but so is reclaiming dignity.
