“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34
To Omar Abdulkadir Artan: they did not diminish your achievement; they diminished an opportunity for sport to do what it does best—bring people together.
Sport rises above politics. It is one of the last remaining spaces where merit, discipline, and excellence can transcend borders and differences.
The decision to deny you entry may have kept you out of a country, but it could never diminish your talent, your dignity, or the respect you have earned across Africa and the world.
The thousands who welcomed you home understood something important: greatness is not conferred by a visa. It is earned through character, hard work, and achievement.
They did not lose you. The decision-makers lost an opportunity to demonstrate the values of fairness, inclusion, and unity that inspire the world.
Your achievement remains unquestioned. Your story remains bigger than this moment.

If Africa's top referee is inadmissible in America, who qualifies? Many are calling it racism.
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was denied entry into the US "due to vetting concerns" even though he had a 3-month multiple entry visa and was traveling on a diplomatic passport
As a World Cup host, the U.S. shouldn't be flippantly barring officials from entering the country to do their jobs.
It's terribly backward.
It's also counterproductive.
Global sports competitions should improve international exchange and relations, not the reverse.
16 Arab Islamic Countries Condemn Somaliland’s Opening of Purported Embassy in Jerusalem
Doha | May 24, 2026
The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Türkiye, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Indonesia, the Republic of Djibouti, the Federal Republic of Somalia, the State of Palestine, the Sultanate of Oman, the Republic of the Sudan, the Republic of Yemen, and the Lebanese Republic condemn in the strongest terms the illegal and unacceptable step taken by the so-called “Somaliland” region in opening a purported “embassy” in occupied Jerusalem. This constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and relevant international resolutions, and represents a direct infringement on the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem.
The Ministers reaffirm their categorical rejection of any unilateral measures aimed at entrenching an illegal reality in occupied Jerusalem or conferring legitimacy on any entities or arrangements that contravene international law and relevant United Nations resolutions. They reiterate that East Jerusalem has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967, and that any measures intended to alter its legal and historical status are null and void and without legal effect.
The Ministers further emphasize their full support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and their unequivocal rejection of any unilateral measures that undermine the unity of Somali territory or infringe upon its sovereignty.

State Sen. Zaynab Mohamed is a champion for her district and for Minnesota. I can’t think of a better leader for the 2026 Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award. Vote for Zaynab!

What is presented as recognition is, in truth, a continuation of colonial surgery.
The colonized world is once again cut along lines not drawn by its peoples, but by external powers seeking strategic comfort, moral laundering, or geopolitical leverage.
#Somalia will not allow it.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission rejects any recognition of Somaliland and reaffirms the African Union’s unwavering commitment to the unity and sovereignty of #Somalia.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has taken note, with deep concern, of recent developments relating to Somaliland.
In this regard, the Chairperson of the Commission unequivocally reaffirms the longstanding and consistent position of the African Union, grounded in the principles enshrined in the Constitutive Act of the African Union, in particular the respect for the intangibility of borders inherited at independence, as affirmed by the 1964 decision of the Organization of African Unity.
The Chairperson of the Commission @ymahmoudali firmly rejects any initiative or action aimed at recognizing Somaliland as an independent entity, recalling that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Any attempt to undermine the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia runs counter to the fundamental principles of the African Union and risks setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the continent.
The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the African Union’s unwavering commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia, as well as its full support for the efforts of the Somali authorities to consolidate peace, strengthen State institutions, and advance inclusive governance.

Under UN Charter Articles 2/4 & 2/7, state sovereignty is protected. Self-determination Article 1/2 must be peaceful and lawful. Somaliland is part of Somalia! our territorial integrity is protected by international law. Our first priority is the unity of our great people. 🇸🇴
Heartbreaking: These girls in Herat, Afghanistan are denied education beyond primary school and have to weave carpets instead. “I only finished 5th grade, but my dream is still to become a doctor”, one told me. It is an intolerable denial of fundamental human rights.
