Good morning from Virginia. 🇺🇸

On this day, July 18, 1792, the daring naval hero of the American Revolution, John Paul Jones, passed away in Paris at the age of 45. Born John Paul in Scotland, he adopted the surname Jones and became one of the Continental Navy’s most legendary captains, striking fear into the hearts of the mighty British fleet with his bold raids along their own coasts. His exploits were the stuff of legend: commanding the USS Ranger in daring strikes, capturing British ships, and leading the famous squadron that included the USS Bonhomme Richard.

During the savage Battle of Flamborough Head in 1779, with his ship battered, leaking, and on fire, Jones faced a British surrender demand. His immortal reply still echoes through American history: “I have not yet begun to fight!” Refusing to yield, he lashed his burning vessel to the enemy’s superior ship and fought hand-to-hand until victory was won. Jones embodied the unyielding American spirit—resourceful, courageous, and relentless in the fight for liberty against overwhelming odds.

Though he died far from the shores he helped defend, his remains were later brought home with honor to rest at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, a fitting tribute to the father of the American Navy. Today we remember his bravery and the fire that helped birth a nation.

Neil Peart wrote the lyrics after reading a poem called “Tom Sawyer” by his friend Pye Dubois (from Max Webster). He then reimagined it as a modern-day rebel — “a modern-day warrior, mean, mean stride.”
The result? One of the most iconic rock songs ever, with that legendary bass line and drum fill that still gives chills.
