In the summer of 1980, a distraught 7th grade boy stood in the courtyard of a modest house in Mylapore, watching his father toss his cricket bat down a deep well. A fast bouncer had shattered the boy's spectacles during a local match & his father, a renowned Sanskrit logician, was terrified for his son's sight.

"Your cricket days are done," his father declared, handing him a violin. "If you want to master precision, master this."

The boy did not throw a tantrum. He directed his focus toward the strings, training until he was performing alongside musical legends, even taking direct corrections from Bharat Ratna M.S. Subbulakshmi.

5 yrs later, he suffered another blow: he failed to clear the IIT-JEE examination.

He did not give up. He enrolled in a regional engineering college, quietly mastering computer science logic gates. He eventually worked his way into IIT Madras as a postgrad researcher, earned a PhD, joined as a prof & eventually became the Director of the very institute that had once turned him away.

By 2011, while the world was building consumer mobile apps, this prof was looking at a hidden national vulnerability: every radar, fighter jet, banking server & defense system in India was running on foreign-designed microprocessors.

He had a single question in his mind: "We can test that a foreign chip does what we WANT it to do. But can we guarantee it does not do something we DO NOT want it to do when a war starts?"

He proposed building a completely indigenous, industrial-grade microprocessor from scratch. Global tech giants insisted it could not be done w/o billions of dollars in infrastructure & massive foreign patents.

He did not care. Working out of cramped labs on long shifts, he & his team adopted the open source RISC-V instruction set. They hand-coded logic gates, mapped silicon layouts & verified billions of instruction cycles.

In July 2018, a tiny 16mm² piece of silicon codenamed Risecreek arrived back at the lab. The team wired it up, flipped the switch & watched a flickering monitor as the Linux operating system booted on 100% Indian-designed silicon for the 1st time in history.

Today, his SHAKTI processor architecture powers everything from defense communications to space grade controllers built in collaboration with ISRO.

That young boy whose father threw his cricket bat down a well...

The violinist who turned down the official IIT Director's mansion to stay in his family home & protect his late father's Sanskrit library...

Open letter to Indians in America.

Dear brothers and sisters from Bharat:

Like I did 37 years ago, you arrived in America with no money but with a good education and cultural heritage from Bharat. You achieved outstanding success. America was good to us. For that we must remain grateful - gratitude is our Bharatiya way.

Yet today, a significant number of Americans, may be not the majority but not too far from it either, believe that Indians "take away" American jobs and our success in America was unfairly earned.

You may think the next election will fix this, but your choice would be between people who hate our Bharatiya civilisation and people who hate civilisation itself. That is the "hard right" vs "woke left" battle. You are mere bystanders to that conflict.

Meanwhile there is one thing that is true now and will be true in the future: the respect Indians command world-wide will substantially depend on the fortunes of India herself. If India remains poor, the woke left will give us moral lectures with pity and the hard right, different moral lectures with scorn ("hellhole") and we must not confuse either with respect.

Respect in today's world, along with prosperity and security, comes from one source: a nation's technological prowess. India produces sufficient brain power to achieve that prowess but alas we exported so much of that talent, particularly to America. As we develop that prowess in India, our civilisational strength will assert itself.

As difficult as it is for many of you to contemplate this, please come back home. Bharat Mata needs your talent. Our vast youthful population needs the technology leadership you gained over the years to guide them towards prosperity. Let's do it with a missionary zeal.

By now, I hope it is clear to all of India's educated elite that we must build up our capabilities here. The mindset "we can buy whatever we lack" or its much deeper axiomatic version "money can buy everything" won't work in this new era. For one, money cannot buy national security nor sovereignty nor resilience. We cannot stand up to bullies if we don't build ourselves up.

More broadly, educated Indians must reexamine our fundamental belief systems. As one example, why are we paying so much for a degree from abroad (and here I am not referring to the low cost medical education in Vietnam - we must examine why medical education is so costly in India!)

Second, should we still value English as the _medium of instruction_? We should learn English _as a language_ but does it make sense to make it the medium for teaching mathematics or history or technology or medicine? English as the medium of instruction is a status symbol from our colonial past. Should that be our future as well?

Why I repeatedly come back to this question is because language has separated us into two classes and that division has only grown worse. English as a status symbol is a bigger barrier today than caste. I know how deeply it is holding back our rural youth.

The solution "government schools offer English medium to everyone" does not work and has never worked. Instead I propose that all our children - rich and poor - must be educated in our own languages as it happens in countries big and small and as it happens in all of the nations of EU.

Yes that means that every kid in Bengaluru must study in Kannada (not just learn Kannada!) and in Chennai must study in Tamil. Countries like the Netherlands with a quarter of the population of Tamil Nadu make it mandatory to learn in Dutch only after a year of enrolling in school there. Children do learn quickly.

So before you react emotionally to my suggestion "how dare you suggest my English fluent children study in Tamil or Kannada medium" ask yourself if that has served our nation well. Are we bringing up our children to have no pride or attachment towards India, particularly the vast majority of our people who do not speak English? Are we not alienating our own children from our roots?

Please don't bring up "IT jobs". We build sophisticated tools like compilers and the team mostly speaks Tamil. We never made it a requirement to be fluent in English and our engineers learn enough English to read English documentation, just as engineers in Japan and China and Korea and Germany all do.

And we do have a lot of non-Tamil speaking engineers too and since they choose to live in Tamil Nadu they learn enough Tamil to work with colleagues. This is what Indians learn to do when we migrate to, say, Germany. It is not the big deal we often make it out to be.

So we must stop making excuses. It starts with our mental attitudes towards our nation and our fellow citizens.

There are several reasons to be Narendra Modi's admirer and supporter (independent of his political power and chosen goals) :

1. You can never see this leader in shabby clothes or improper hair style or confused state of mind.

2. His body language is commanding, his gait is manly.

3. He resembles a saint in saffron, a soldier in military attire and a divine prince in normal daily wear.

4. Patriotism is his breath and discipline is in his blood.

5. In whosoever world leader's company he is, his talent dominates, others appear less talented.

6. Several apparently impossible election promises were fulfilled, we have never seen of any other leader of his calibre in the past.

7. Though he is in nation's higher hieararchy, he never favours his family. Could never see siblings around him, never ever.

8. He never avails any holiday.

9. He has never fallen sick. None has seen him with woollen shawl over his head or neck.

10. He knows how much to talk and when to keep quiet.

11. Being so busy, none has seen him exhausted. Sense of humour is excellent.

12. His speech is sharp and incomparable. Fluency of his language, clarity of thought, articulation in speech all augur well for the country.

13. He is never afraid of the gimmicks and challenges of political foes.

14. He does not waste his time answering the foolishness of opponents. Yet he is wholly committed to his duty with acumen.

15. He is a fusion of the three virtues - health, tradition and honesty.

16. Not only his decisions but also his shrewedness, timing and dedication are noteworthy.

17. His grandeur resembles a holy symbol of Hindu culture.

18. His powerful eyes are capable of making him a hypnotist.

19. This man has no confusion, fear or selfishness.

20. Lastly even at 74 this man works 15 to 20 hours a day. We have not seen him yawning.

If you are a smart ambitious engineer or entrepreneur with a *long term horizon*, rural India is a great place to build your dream. Unlike rural areas in developed countries, rural India still has youthful demographics - in fact better demographics than major cities in India, which rely on migration from rural areas for their talent.

Why not go to the source of the talent? In the average rural district in India (Tenkasi being typical) you have about 20,000 kids born a year. Think deeply about this number! What can you build with that talent? There are over 600 such rural districts in India!

The "long term horizon" part is extremely important. If you want an exit in 3 years, forget it! And look beyond English and engage the talent in their native language.

அதற்கு பிறகு ஒரு படி மேலே போய் “எனக்கே விபூதி அடிக்க பாத்த பாத்தியா” என்ற டயலாக் சினிமாவில் வந்து புகழ்பெற்றது. அந்த டயலாக் கை ஆன்மீக வாதியாக இருக்க கூடிய இந்த யோகி பாபு வாயாலே பேச வைத்தது தான் நகைமுரண். அதனாலேயே என்னமோ இன்று அவர் விழித்துக்கொண்டார்.

இனிமேலாவது மேற்கண்ட பூமர் டயலாக்கை எல்லாம் விட்டுவிட்டு தமிழ்ச்சமூக இளைய தலைமுறை போல, யோகி பாபு போல எல்லோரும் விழிப்படைய வேண்டும் .
