The Spectator gets it. Vance is not one of us but his rise has ignited debate about what it means to be Appalachian.
Is Appalachia a geographic or cultural region or both? What makes you an Appalachian American?

It was a gorgeous day in Mars Hill, NC. The fall colors aren't quite on full display as yet but it was still a beautiful drive up I-26 from Asheville. It won't be long until the green completely gives away to the red, orange and yellow colors of autumn.
Twitter told me Asheville was terrible.
AVOID!
One big homeless camp, drugs & crime everywhere, insane leftist weirdos accosting you on every corner.
Then I went and found a quirky mountain town with good food, cool bars, friendly people.
Social media is a lie.
As an Appalachian Studies student I am acquainted with the critiques of JD Vance.
But the cries of structural oppression do nothing to aid our people.
Vance is not Appalachian and doesn’t speak for us but his message of personal responsibility is sorely needed in our region.
Bootstraps or no boots?
Will Trump VP pick JD Vance’s Conservative assessment of Appalachian poverty resonate with the regions voters or has there been an “Appalachian Reckoning” that he’s just a victim blamer?

OK, the green sections of this map are Ohio’s 32 beautiful Appalachian counties. The red X is suburban Middletown, where JD Vance was born and raised.
Heard somebody on NBC say that if Vance is picked he would be the first person on the ticket in a long time from Appalachia.
Middletown, Ohio is not Appalachia.
Salamander Capital of the World.
Technically classified as a temperate rainforest, Appalachia boasts a rich diversity of plants and animals that you can't find anywhere else.

New Max docuseries explores the mystery behind dead Appalachian Trail hiker.
It would take 2 years, 1000s of internet sleuths, & a miracle of science but that's when the trouble really started.
