Before and during the Reformation, one of Martin Luther’s goals was to convince the Jews to convert to Christianity. The Jews were very insolar, and rarely in European history did any convert. He had audience with several Jewish leaders and Hebrew-Christian scholars to discuss these issues.

In his work “Jesus Christ was Born a Jew” (1523), he argued that Jews had been mistreated and mishandled by the Catholic Church. He said the Church treated Jews as if they were dogs, and criticized anyone who denied that Christ was a Jew.

He wrote that the failure to convert German Jews to Christianity was due to the Catholic Church’s corruption and false gospel, and believed Jews would finally accept Christ if the gospel was “cleansed” through Protestantism.

He encouraged his followers to welcome the Jews, to allow them to conduct business in their lands, and learn Christian teachings.

Many years later, with a fractured Christendom and sparse Jewish conversion, he felt betrayed. Many Jewish preachers were using the chaos of the reformation to reintroduce circumcision and interest, which were both condemned by the Catholic Church.

He became firmly anti-Judaic in 1537 and denounced them in his writing “On the Jews and their Lies” (1543) and called for their expulsion from German domains. His later work was a major influence for important political figures in the 20th century.

In April 1941, the governing body of Mount Athos sent a letter to Adolf Hitler asking him to place the monastic republic under his personal protection to safeguard their independence and precious artifacts from occupying forces.

Following the Nazi invasion of Greece, the monks feared that advancing Bulgarian forces would seize and plunder the ancient monasteries, manuscripts, and priceless religious icons.

Hitler agreed to the arrangement, and the German military largely left the monastic community to continue its secluded traditions undisturbed, with some monks temporarily bestowing upon him the title "High Protector of the Holy Mountain".
