👉🏿Yesterday was a momentous day, a day to celebrate. The UK High Court ruled that the proscription of #PalestineAction under terrorism laws was unlawful and disproportionate, “ finding in favour of the group’s co-founder, Huda Ammori, on two of the grounds brought forward in the judicial review.
The two legal grounds found unlawful
1. Violations of ECHR rights (disproportionality): the High Court found that the ban constituted a “very significant interference” with Article 10 (freedom of expression) an Article 11 (freedom of assembly and association) rights of those supporting Palestine Action. The Court concluded that the Home Secretary’s action was not “justified“ and therefore not “prescribed by law“ making the restriction disproportional.
2. Failure to Follow Policy (Public Law Error): The Court ruled that the decision to proscribe the group was inconsistent with the Home Secretary’s one published policy regarding the exercise of discretion under the Terrorism Act 2000.
On the nature of the ban: the High Court found the ban “disproportionate and unlawful“ and that “most of their activities had not reached the level, scale and persistence to be defined as terrorism“.
On the rights interference: The court ruled that the proscription “entail a very significant interference with Conventions rights - including the criminal ation of expressions support for Palestine Action and the resultant chilling effect on freedom of a speech and the right to protest - that required a commensurately weighty justification”.
On the result: the High Court proposed to make an order “quashing the decision to proscribe Palestine Action”.
The ban remains in place temporarily, as the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmoud, has indicated an intention to appeal.

👉🏿 This year is truly special - for the first time in memory Nauroze (Zoroastrian New Year), Eid-ul-Fitr (Muslin) and Chaitra Navarro (Hinduism) have fallen on the same day. A moment like this reminds us of something powerful: no matter our traditions, cultures, or faith, we share the same hopes for peace, prosperity, good health, new beginnings.
Nowruz is being celebrated in #Iran as the Persian New Year or “new day” - it marks the arrival of Spring. Celebrated for more than 3,000 years across Iran and many other regions, it symbolises renewal, hope and unity and the harmony between humanity and nature. Today, I am calling attention to all those who have been imprisoned in that country for simply raising their voices peacefully. I appeal for their freedom, for the protection of their lives, and for an end to repression.
Today, I also raise my voice to appeal for the young Iranian women footballers who, with courage, have chosen to return home and not to remain silent. These are women who not only play football but also peacefully challenge a system that, for years, has sought to silence them, render them invisible, and punish them for exercising their freedom. They should not be targeted for refusing to sing the anthem, for becoming symbols of dignity in the face of fear.
Today, in my capacity as Founder and President of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation @TheBJHRF and sponsor of the Instituto CASLA campaign #SponsorAPoliticalPrisonerWorldwide, I wish to state: that they are not alone. I will serve as their voice when attempts are made to silence them. I will amplify their struggle, their courage, and their right to live without fear.
Sports ought to constitute a space of freedom rather than repression. No woman should be compelled to risk her life or her future for expressing herself, for playing, or for existing. These young women represent thousands of others in Iran who have been persecuted for aspiring to something as fundamental as equality. Cases such as that of Sahar Jodayarí underscore the high cost many have paid in their efforts to occupy spaces that were denied to them.
Today, I stand with them and I commit myself to be their #godmother. Until they are able to speak without fear. Until playing is no longer an act of courage, but an expression of freedom.

The British Museum has removed the word “Palestine” from its Ancient Middle East displays — despite the name appearing in Herodotus, Roman records, medieval maps, Ottoman sources, and even Shakespeare.

#Ukraine: Kids no longer ask when Russia's invasion will end, they ask if they'll survive the night.
Solidarity with @Amnesty_UA colleagues doing critical human rights work under relentless bombardment & freezing conditions as Russia bombs civilians & destroy infrastructure.
European governments must stop spreading fake news and intentionally distorting UN Special Rapporteur @FranceskAlbs’s words to damage her credibility. Ministers in Austria, Czechia, France, Germany, and Italy circulated a deliberately manipulated and truncated video to fabricate accusations against a UN expert, then called for her resignation, while staying silent as Israel’s genocide, unlawful occupation, and apartheid continue.
At @Amnesty we denounce this politically motivated attempt to silence Albanese, whose evidence‑based reporting has exposed Israel’s ongoing atrocities. Europe must publicly retract these false attacks, apologize, and focus on addressing the more than 72,000 Palestinians killed since 2023 https://t.co/8zBrgzVPWA

The calls for her to resign are the latest in a series of alarming personal attacks and attempts to silence her – and must be categorically rejected.
@amnesty statement 👇https://t.co/EW55sSOlIm
@FranceskAlbs' commitment to objectively investigate facts based on hard evidence and apply international law has been vital in exposing Israel’s ongoing violations of Palestinians’ rights and the complicity of third parties.
If only these minsters had been as loud & forceful in confronting a state committing genocide, unlawful occupation and apartheid as they have in attacking a UN expert.
The ministers that have spread disinformation must act beyond merely deleting their comments on social media – as some have done. They must publicly apologize and retract any calls for @FranceskAlbs resignation.
Shameful response from @EU_Commission to outrageous attacks from EU ministers on @FranceskAlbs
The deliberately truncated video misrepresents & gravely misconstrues her messages.
The real issue: Israel’s genocide in Gaza, its system of apartheid & unlawful occupation of the OPT
My full AJ Forum speech last week: the common enemy of humanity is THE SYSTEM that has enabled the genocide in Palestine, including the financial capital that funds it, the algorithms that obscure it and the weapons that enable it.

BREAKING: government’s decision to proscribe Palestine Action under terrorism law ruled UNLAWFUL
This matters for everyone.
For years, the right to protest has been under sustained and deliberate attack.
Thousands of people have been arrested for something that should have never been a crime.
The Government has increasingly reached for sweeping counterterrorism powers to silence critics and suppress dissent.
But today’s ruling draws a clear line in the sand.
The government must now protect protest rights and make sure counter-terror laws are not misused.
Amnesty will continue working to ensure the Government respects both the spirit and the letter of today’s ruling.
