Now compare that to China in 2023:
A woman in Hunan ran around the street swinging two kitchen knives, endangering anyone nearby.
Chinese police spent minutes blocking, distancing, shielding, trying to stop her without lethal force, and finally subdued her without killing her.

Same “danger,”two completely different doctrines:
– China: Contain, de-escalate, protect civilians, preserve life.
– USA: Shoot first, justify later, blame the victim, call it “freedom.”

So when Americans call China a police state, we calmly reply:
If this is “freedom,” we’re fine without it.

One thing that isn't talked about often enough is how developmentalist leaders that were somewhat allied with the US were eventually targeted for removal by the US itself towards the end of the Cold War. Too much control over their economies, especially protectionism over industry.

Chiang Kai-shek's Soviet-trained son and successor, Chiang Ching-kuo, who was responsible for Taiwan's economic boom in the 70s and 80s suspected the same thing regarding Park Chung-hee in his now public diaries.

The 80s liberal opposition movement in Taiwan that brought us the DPP was not so secretly supported by the US. Martial law had its problems and excesses for sure, but the US supported democratization at that time not because of human rights or anything like that, but because they figured a liberal democracy would be much easier to manipulate than an illiberal developmentalist regime.

And they were right. People talk about Lee Teng-hui as the man that liberalized Taiwan politically, but few talk about how the economy, which was semi-planned, was liberalized by him over the 90s.

The turn of the century was when real wages stopped growing for average working people while the GDP kept growing.
