What writers can learn from PLUR1BUS. One thing we've seen across all Vince Gilligan's shows is this: the man loves process. The minutiae of it all. The way Manousos slowly and methodically records numbers in his notebook. It reveals something about his character. He's fastidious and methodical and, above all, patient which, as we know, is a virtue. We like him because of it. That seems obvious, but it's also a bit counterintuitive.

Unlike Manousos, writers are often impatient to get to the next plot point. Because the faster the pace the more exciting and engaging the story will be. Gilligan goes the other way. He slows the pace, breaks things down, step by step. And what's the effect? It creates tension and suspense and, above all, drama. Inexperienced writers have a tendency to gloss over things or rush through them. Those scripts often lack detail and specificity. And as a result, they seem less grounded in reality, less authentic. We don't buy it. Instead you should to take the time to think things through and then decide what to show and what not to show in a conscious and deliberate way. It stops you from skipping over something important. But also it can inspire ideas for conflicts and obstacles that you otherwise might not be aware of. You should always be trying to throw a monkey wrench into your protagonist's plans, to make things harder, not easier for them.

Two things I see all the time in bad or mediocre scripts. One: too much plot, not enough story. Things are happening, but it's not moving us forward. It seems like busy work for your hero but no actual progress or problem solving. Two: things are way too easy for the hero. Conflicts are suddenly resolved out of nowhere or simply forgotten. Contrivances and coincidences that make us feel like the writer has run out of ideas. That's how you end up with the dreaded "it was all just a dream" ending.

I like to use the term "deus ex machina" a lot in my coverage because it's Latin and makes me sound smart, but also describes a certain kind of ending that feels unearned and thus unsatisfying for an audience. Aliens who have incredibly advanced space travel technology but are allergic to water that invade a planet that's made of water (SIGNS). Even dumber aliens who don't know what germs are (WAR OF THE WORLDS).
