Kipchoge did it in Nikes in 2019, but it was with lazers and pacemakers. It didn’t count.

Is Foreign Financial Media Anti-India?

1. Bull Mkt: “It’s my skill.” Bear Mkt: “It’s Soros & Bloomberg.”

2. Media’s default state must be skepticism.

3. Negativity is high-value information. Positives are well-known.

4. Media in EM's is a circus to mislead retail.

INSIGHTS:

Financial Media Has a “Watchdog” Mandate

a. People want to get rich fast, so they will bet their life’s savings into stocks overnight, fooled by market euphoria.

The role of financial media is not to join the “momentum party.” Its job is to warn of downside risks when vested interests push a bullish narrative.

b. Instead of promoting every dip as a “lifetime opportunity to buy,” financial media must remind small salary earners and retired pensioners that a dip could also be a “breach of risk limits” (stock price could drop 50% further).

c. Financial media’s role is to counter manipulative narratives and defend the interests of the common man.

Financial journalists must assume that any statement from a promoter or a fund manager is “spin” until proven otherwise. Skepticism is the default state of a prudent reporter.

d. Paid subscribers of Bloomberg, Reuters, Financial Times, or the Wall Street Journal are not looking for bullish propaganda. They already know India is a “7% GDP Growth Story,” which is fully priced in.

What they pay for is the “negative story.” The hidden risks of currency instability, liquidity stress, regulatory changes, or corporate governance lapses. Negativity is high-value information.

A wise investor does not pay for multi-bagger stock tips. But he will pay any price if you can tell him what could break his portfolio.

e. Global investors are obsessed with risk in all Emerging Markets (EMs), not just India. Bloomberg and others repeatedly highlights these risks:

India: Overvalued, Regulators favoring family-controlled empires

Brazil: Government overspending (poor fiscal discipline), policies for public appeasement

Turkey: No independence of central bank, unreliable policies of President Erdogan

China: state interference, total distrust in official data

Indian Financial Media: Cheerleader of Vested Interests

a. Barring a few genuine and admirable financial journalists, Indian media knows that greed sells more than fear. Their permanent narrative is: “buy the rise,” “buy the dip,” just buy. Sell your mother’s bangles and buy.

b. Critical analysis of GDP or employment data or a bearish market outlook means you are spreading panic or attempting to derail the India story. High-profile fund managers who raise slogans like: “Sensex to 100K” are treated as celebrities.

c. With this cheerleader culture, financial media has turned India’s investing environment into a circus. Every stock is a potential multi-bagger and every IPO is the next HDFC Bank. When the same retail-favourite stock or IPO crashes, there is no post-mortem.

d. Millions of new, small investors are shown a “dream” version of the market on Indian TV everyday: (1) Stocks only go up; (2) India’s growth is permanent; and (3) Bear market is only “temporary volatility.”

ENDPIECE: The Economic Cost of a Weak Media

People in every country work hard, yet only a few nations become developed economies. The difference lies in the integrity of their institutions.

If Indian financial media remains a “service provider” to the elite or a PR department for corporates and fund managers, it can help in wealth transfer from millions of small Demat account holders to a few large sharks.

But it comes at a cost – the failure to become a developed nation.

What better tribute to elephants on the #WorldElephantDay than guaranteeing their right to a safe life. Since November 2023, this system has ensured zero elephant deaths on the tracks. We have installed 12 towers and 24 thermal cameras on constant watch, 6,592 elephants have crossed safely. Saluting forest rangers, track watchers, guards, loco pilots and officers who are making this possible. I had a 20 minute conversation on the phone with Mr Sivakumar today and felt so utterly helpless at the end of it. He broke down in tears many times. From placing his daughter’s body in the morgue to the response of the police, from cremation grounds to cops, he spoke of hostile red tape and open corruption. The most horrific account of sexual violence and abuse has emerged from Satara in Maharashtra where a 26 year old female doctor who worked in a government hospital has died by suicide - leaving a short hand written note on the palm of her hand and a longer four page letter - detailing how Sub Inspector Gopal Badne raped her four times. In more shocking details that are now emerging, the hand written letter accessed by @themojostory also points a finger at a Member of Parliament who she alleges pressured her through his two personal assistants. The entire tussle, her note says, was over her being asked to issue fake fitness certificates in police cases. Her abuse and harassment, she writes, began, when she declined to do so. Recounting a specific incident she says two assistants to an MP walked into the hospital where she worked and asked for such fake fitness certificates. When she resisted, the men made her speak to the MP who pressured her to do what they demanded . Her family says she made several complaints to senior officers of the police in writing but no action was taken. Absolutely horrific abuse of power that took the life of a young woman. When will our women have a safe working environment? Every such horror account will discourage women from entering or staying in the work force apart from of course the gigantic tragedy of a life lost
