The TLDR of the FTX grift was as follows:
Sam/Gary Wang both own Alameda and FTX. Alameda trades, FTX is an exchange. Alameda also trades on FTX.
All user accounts should be treated the same.
In 2019, Gary Wang adds a function to the ALAMEDA accounts on FTX called "allow negative". This allows Alameda to withdraw more money than they have in their accounts.
Sam justifies this by saying (paraphrasing) "we can cover the withdrawals by eating into FTX's revenue."
Eventually Alameda's withdrawals exceed the amount of revenue of FTX. Sam then tells Gary to include the FTT token (Sam's made up crypto) in the revenue of FTX so they have a larger pool of money to draw from.
This buys them some more time but eventually Alameda's withdraws even more than that.
The money has to come from somewhere: customer funds.
When they ran out of ways to artificially prop up the pool of money they were withdrawing from, they used the next most immediate thing: customer money.
Gary, at some point during all this, sets up Alameda with a $65 BILLION line of credit. For comparison most market makers who have a line of credit have single to double digit millions.
Alameda at the end of it all had withdrawn $8 BILLION against their $65B line of credit.
LUNA crashed, the market turned, and companies/lenders/etc. started going bankrupt. This lowered the value of the total pool of money FTX was drawing from.
Then, the FTX financials leaked to Coindesk, and CZ sold his FTT, *again* lowering the total pool of money FTX was drawing from.
The fear of the FTT sale sparked a bank run on FTX and lo and behold, FTX was caught with its pants down and hands in the cookie jar.
Alameda had withdrawn too much of customer funds and they couldn't cover the withdrawals.
Game over.
