I’d been living on an island in the Mediterranean for some time. [...] I was living for a thousand dollars a year there. I’d come back [to Canada] to make a thousand dollars and my boat or plane fare then go back for as long as that would last.

My tunes often deal with a moral crisis. I often feel myself a part of such a crisis and try to relate it in song. There’s a line in a poem I wrote that sums this up perfectly:
‘My betrayals are so fresh they still come with explanations.’

It was dangerous to accept a potato chip at a cocktail party [in 60s New York]. I speak literally. It could be sprinkled with acid. I went to somebody’s room who was having a cocktail party, had a few chips, and 4 days later was still trying to find my room.

As a young man, Yeats spoke to me in a way I could understand. Shakespeare I couldn't understand, but Yeats I could. It was his subject matter and also I really admired the way he put his personal life on the line.

I dreamed about you baby
You were wearing half your dress
I know you have to hate me
But could you hate me less?
I used up all my chances
And you’ll never take me back
But there ain’t no harm in asking
Could you cut me one more slack?

I can make a couple of good sandwiches: tuna salad and chopped egg salad. And Greek bean soup. I was a cook for my old Zen master for many years. So there were two or three dishes that he liked, you know. Teriyaki salmon, a few things.

My mind was always very cluttered, so I took great pains to simplify my environment, because if my environment were half as cluttered as my mind, I wouldn't be able to make it from room to room.
