Very pleased to announce that my latest book, 'A NEW AXIS OF UPHEAVAL: North Korea, Russia, China, Iran' will be published by @HurstPublishers later this year.
Amidst global geopolitical turbulence, there is no better time than the present to understand these dynamics.
@TheEdwardHowell opens the floor by noticing what has been missing from the conversation: "Beijing's latest readout doesn't mention denuclearization at all. That word has quietly dropped out of how China talks about North Korea." #TheImpossibleState
Furthermore, @TheEdwardHowell argues we're not taking these four countries' cooperation seriously enough. He points past the Russia–DPRK treaty's headline mutual-defense clause to articles nine and ten, which extend cooperation into disaster management and even cyber. If the bilateral relationship endures, expect China to keep an eye on it — and benefit where it can. #TheImpossibleState
Join me, Sydney Seiler, and @VictorDCha on @CSISKoreaChair later today.

This reminds me of one of Reagan’s excellent jokes, wherein a Soviet tells an American that he, too, can enter his own country’s presidential office and complain to the president—-except the Soviet goes to the Kremlin, bangs the table, and tells Gorbachev that “he doesn’t like the way President Reagan is running his country”.
A Japanese reporter and a Chinese reporter debate which country enjoys more press freedom
Japanese reporter: I can go to the Shangrila's Dialogue and ask tough questions to the Japanese Defense Minister and face no retribution from my government.
Chinese reporter: So what? I too can go to the Shangrila's Dialogue and ask tough questions to the Japanese Defense Minister and face no retribution from my government.
I have a new trade book coming out with @politybooks in October! (Available to preorder now.) It considers the highly politicised conversations that are taking place around the arts today, and considers whether they are helping or hindering the arts at a time of crisis. /
The FM of Singapore is in NK and is then headed to S.Korea. Last time he visited was to prepare to host Trump-Kim 2018 summit. Xi is reported to visit NK this week also. Xi and Trump talked about NK during their summit. High-level US-SK bilat this week as well. Flurry of diplomacy could mean something? Watch this space.
@GeorgyKantor@amwilson_opera I once bought a book—I know, an actual book—and it was pouring with rain outside. The person at the cashier refused to give me a larger bag. Well, if they want to sell books that are unreadable because they are drenched in rain…
Exclusive: Xi Jinping will visit North Korea for a second state visit, perhaps as early as next week, two sources with knowledge of the trip told me https://t.co/JYPaLhkIAm
In my latest piece for @EngelsbergIdeas, I argue how Japan and South Korea must strengthen cooperation in the face of mutual coercive threats.
An East Asian NATO may remain a dream, but bilateral and trilateral cooperation against an increasingly emboldened North Korea and China is more urgent than ever.
